🐾 Community Health Update | Please Read
After speaking with one of our local veterinary clinics today, we have confirmed that a very aggressive upper respiratory illness is currently circulating in our area.
⚠️ Important clarification:
This is NOT Bordetella (traditional kennel cough) — meaning the Bordatella vaccine will not prevent this strain. Even dogs that are fully vaccinated may still become ill.
We want to share accurate information so everyone can make informed decisions and help slow the spread.

🦠 Respiratory Illness Breakdown (Simple + Honest)
❌ Traditional Kennel Cough (Bordetella)
• Mild, dry “honking” cough
• Dogs usually feel fine otherwise
• Bordetella vaccine helps reduce risk
⚠️ Current Upper Respiratory Illness / Flu-Like Virus
• Deep or persistent cough
• Thick nasal discharge
• Lethargy, fever, reduced appetite
• Symptoms may worsen quickly
• No preventative vaccine available
This is why we are seeing cases even in well-vaccinated, healthy dogs.

🛑 What We Need From You (This Matters)
✔️ PLEASE DO NOT bring symptomatic dogs into the facility. This is in order to protect and prevent any contagious illnesses from spreading.
✔️ Monitor your dog closely for coughing, sneezing, nasal discharge, lethargy, or appetite changes.
✔️ If symptoms appear, contact your veterinarian promptly for further treatment advice.
✔️ Notify any facility your dog has attended if illness develops afterward.

🏥 What We Are Doing at MuttWorks
• Increased sanitation protocols
• Close monitoring of dogs in our care for symptoms
• Ongoing communication with local veterinary professionals for advisory
• Conservative decisions when symptoms are questionable — always erring on the side of dog safety
- If your pup developes symptoms while in our care, we will keep them in quarantined areas and ask that you pick them up as soon as possible.
We know disruptions are frustrating, but protecting the entire dog community comes first.
Thank you for trusting us, communicating honestly, and helping keep Barklatex dogs healthy. 🐶💙
