We are a small nonprofit organization dedicated to helping Phoenix area East Valley cats. We began Prickly Pear Cat Rescue and TNR in the fall of 2021.

We have always been passionate about animal welfare and after a few years of working with our city to Trap, Neuter, Return (TNR) community cats, along with working with other rescues for resources for adoptable kittens from local colonies, we decided to direct our efforts into creating and running a nonprofit organization so that we can continue this important work. This change in direction was due to the city deciding to end its funding of the TNR program and our need to continue fundraising to help these cats in a humane manner. We are a small no-kill organization with the goals of ensuring that local community cats are cared for with adequate food, safe shelter, spay and neuter, community education, and placing adoptable cats in homes.

🤧 Our kittens aren’t feeling their best. 💔🐾

Unfortunately, our little ones have come down with a respiratory infection, and Struggle Bus, Xavier, and Sophie have been hit the hardest so far. The other kittens have been sneezing and sniffling, too, so we’re keeping a close eye on everyone.

They may not be playing as much as usual, but they’re still some of the sweetest kittens around. ❤️ If anything, being under the weather has made them even cuddlier! They’ve been seeking comfort from us and snuggling up with each other while they work through this.

While we’re doing everything we can to help them feel better, the costs are adding up. This litter has already needed quite a few vet visits, and between those appointments and their ongoing care, the expenses are becoming a real challenge for our rescue.

If you’re able to contribute toward their veterinary care, we would be incredibly grateful. Every donation helps us get these little ones the treatment they need and gives us the ability to keep saying yes to cats who need our help. 🐱💕 Sebastian: The Cat’s Cat 💕

Sebastian has once again proven that if there’s another cat nearby, he’s probably going to try to become their best friend. 😂

In this video, Sebastian has apparently convinced Chloe that she should groom him, and he is enjoying every single second of it. Just look at that happy little face! 😻

We like to call Sebastian a “cat’s cat.” He absolutely loves other cats and seems determined to be best friends with every single feline in the rescue. Whether it’s playing, cuddling, grooming, or just hanging out together, Sebastian is happiest when he has another cat around.

People are a little different. Sebastian can be shy when meeting new people and sometimes needs a little time to feel comfortable. But once he decides you're okay, his sweet and affectionate side really comes out. ❤️

We love watching him make friends with everyone he meets, and we're hoping his future home will have a kitty companion who appreciates having a best friend as much as Sebastian does. 🥰🐾

Everyone needs a best friend. Sebastian just thinks everyone should be his. 😂💕

🎉 SOPHIE HAS REACHED THE OBSERVATION STAGE! 🎉

We got Sophie’s bloodwork back today, and we are absolutely thrilled to announce that she can officially move on to the observation stage of her FIP treatment! 🥹💗

That means no more medication! 🎊 After completing her treatment, we’ll now be closely monitoring Sophie’s health for the next 84 days to make sure she continues to stay healthy and strong.

Sophie has overcome SO much during her time with us. From her initial health problems (fleas, tapeworms, panleuk, etc...) and FIP diagnosis to the skin lesions and everything else she has had to fight through, this little girl has shown us just how strong she is. We are incredibly fortunate that she has made it through everything and is now at this point in her journey. ❤️

She’s been steadily gaining weight, staying active, playing with her siblings (as you can see her bunny kicking poor Dexter lol), and acting more and more like the happy kitten she was always meant to be. Seeing her here today makes all of the worry, sleepless nights, medications, vet visits, and bloodwork worth it.

We still have 84 days of observation ahead of us, so we're not quite ready to officially call Sophie cured just yet. But today is a HUGE step toward that day. 🥰

We cannot thank everyone enough for supporting Sophie and our rescue throughout her FIP journey. Every donation, share, kind word, and person who followed along and cheered her on helped us get here.

Now we get to watch our girl enjoy being a normal kitten while we count down the days until we can officially say our sweet little girl is cured.

🐾 George had a big day! 🧡

Our handsome orange-and-white boy had his vet appointment today, and he got quite the checklist completed! George was neutered, vaccinated, microchipped, and had a stool sample tested to make sure we’re starting his journey with a clean bill of health. 🩺🐱

He’s now recovering at home and doing well. We have him wearing a soft cone to keep him from bothering his surgery site, and thankfully, he doesn't seem to mind it too much. The one exception? Trying to eat with it on. 😂🍽️

He may not be a fan of the cone interfering with dinner, but overall he's handling everything like a champ. We’re so proud of how far this shy boy has come since arriving at Prickly Pear and can’t wait to see him continue coming out of his shell.

💗 Sophie’s Cozy Countdown! 💗

We caught Sophie doing something that makes our hearts so happy—sleeping on her back in Lego’s den without a care in the world. 🥹🐾

Of course, I accidentally woke her up while filming. She gave me that “excuse me, I was sleeping” look, looked around to make sure everything was still where she left it, and then promptly started drifting back off. 😴😂

It may seem like just a cute nap, but seeing Sophie this comfortable means so much to us. After everything this little girl has been through, watching her relax enough to sleep belly-up in one of her favorite cozy spots is something we don't take for granted.

Sophie is now just over a week away from her final blood panel to see if she's ready to officially move into the observation phase of her FIP treatment. She has been steadily gaining weight, staying active, and happily playing with her siblings, so we're feeling very confident that we'll have some positive news to share when that day arrives. 💕🐱

Her skin is also almost completely healed from the lesions she developed. Her fur has grown back everywhere except for one little spot on the bottom of her tail that's taking its time—but even there, we're seeing progress!

For now, we're just enjoying seeing our girl so happy, healthy, and comfortable that she can curl up on her back and take a completely carefree nap. ❤️

🐾 Please welcome our newest rescue, George! 🐾🧡

George is a handsome orange-and-white boy who is estimated to be about 10–11 months old. He recently came into our rescue after the person who found him learned they would be getting deployed. Wanting to make sure George would be safe, cared for, and find a wonderful forever home, they made the difficult decision to relinquish him to us. ❤️

George has been a little shy while he gets used to all the new sights, sounds, and people around him, but underneath that initial nervousness is a very sweet boy. We're giving him plenty of time to settle in and letting him learn that his new caretakers are here to take care of him. 🥰

And we're already seeing some progress! In his video, George is finally starting to chow down on some wet food. He's still getting the hang of this whole “eating neatly” thing, though! 😂 He may have gotten a little more food on the tower than in himself, but he sure seems to be enjoying dinner. 🐱🍽️

Over the next few weeks, we'll be getting George caught up on his vaccinations and getting him neutered. Once we've made sure he's healthy and ready, he'll be looking for his forever home! 🏡

Welcome to the Prickly Pear family, George. We can't wait to watch you come out of your shell and show everyone what a sweet boy you are! 🧡🐾

😂 Dexter has an important announcement: Pay attention to me!

Dexter was happily playing with the ball track toy alongside Xavier when he suddenly noticed that I was filming. Obviously, playing could wait—getting some attention from his human was much more important! 😹

He ran over for a little bit of love and attention, made sure I knew he was there, and then ran right back to continue playing with Xavier and the toy.

Dexter is one of the clingiest kittens we've ever had. Throughout the day, he will loudly let me know that he needs attention until I finally pick him up and hold him. Once he's in my arms, he settles down and is perfectly content... at least until he decides it's time to go play again. 😂

He's absolutely full of energy and loves playing with his siblings and all of the other cats in the rescue. But no matter how much fun he's having, he always has time to stop by and remind his humans that he needs some love, too. ❤️🐾

❤️ Sometimes it's the smallest moments that remind us why we do what we do.

Xavier had a little tumble in the bathroom and ended up falling onto my foot, so I decided to sit down with him for a bit. Before long, Lego came in to check on us and apparently decided that her wobbly friend needed a bath. 🥹

She settled in and groomed Xavier until she was satisfied, while Xavier purred through the entire thing. It was such a simple, sweet moment between two of our special needs cats, but moments like this make all of the extra work, care, and worrying worth it.

Lego was the first paraplegic cat we ever took in and taught us so much about caring for cats with special needs. Xavier has cerebellar hypoplasia and has his own unique challenges. Watching the two of them simply care for each other is something we'll never take for granted.

Thank you to everyone who has followed along with their journeys, supported our rescue, and cheered these two on. We're so grateful to have you along for all of the little moments that make this journey so special. ❤️🐾

😂 Well, that didn't go quite as planned!

I thought I was about to catch Sophie and Xavier playing together, but Xavier had other plans. Within seconds of Sophie leaving, he decided that playtime was overrated and it was officially time for a nap instead. 😴

With his cerebellar hypoplasia, also known as wobbly cat syndrome, Xavier sometimes ends up sleeping in some pretty unique positions. And with the Arizona heat, we've been finding him more and more often sprawled out on the cool floor, completely upside down with his little leggies doing whatever happens to be comfortable at the moment. 😂

He may look a little ridiculous, but he's clearly figured out exactly how he likes to relax. And honestly, we're just happy to see our wobbly boy feeling comfortable enough to completely flop over and take a good nap. 💙🐾

Sometimes you just have to let the wobbly kitten sleep. ❤️
