There is no point in teaching your horse to take off on a perfect stride every time. While it is never a bad thing to be able to see a stride, there will always be times when we approach a fence on the “wrong” stride, or perhaps not be able to find one at all.
If you have only trained your horse to jump out of a perfect stride, he will not know how to safely navigate the fence in these situations, and you may well end up in trouble.
Instead, we must let the horse learn how to think for himself, and how to safely navigate obstacles from any stride, without being told exactly where to take off every time.
This way, if things do go a little wrong, and you find yourself approaching a jump without being able to see the correct stride, then you know that your horse will be able to use his own brain, and get you both out of trouble, and safely over the jump.
