High in the Swiss Alps, where snow drifts whisper against the glass and winds bite through steel, a new kind of refuge has appeared — not for tourists, but for the forgotten. Dozens of retired ski gondolas, once carrying skiers to icy peaks, are being repurposed into solar-heated shelters for stray dogs left to wander the mountains.

Each gondola is restored with insulated walls, soft bedding, and a solar heating panel fixed to its roof. During daylight, it soaks up sunlight and stores energy, releasing it as gentle warmth through the night. Volunteers make daily rounds to bring food and water, ensuring every four-legged guest stays fed and safe through the stormy Alpine nights.

What once symbolized luxury now stands for mercy. The glass cabins that once ferried adventurers now cradle small lives in quiet comfort. Snow gathers softly on the roofs as steam rises from the breath of the sleeping dogs inside — a silent image of compassion shining through the cold.

This project began as a student idea in Zürich: “What if comfort could travel both ways?” The answer turned into a nationwide movement of kindness — transforming the old into something newly alive, where even forgotten machines have hearts again.

As the mountains sleep beneath their white blankets, these gondola-shelters glow softly — tiny beacons of hope against the endless cold.
