It's summer and it is hott, but if you have a double coated dog like a Husky, German Shepherd, Lab, Aussie, or a Golden Retreiver, don't be like Pedro from Napoleon Dynamite!

If their coats are maintained properly, it isn't their hair that's making them hot. Dogs with double coats are designed so that the fluffy undercoat keeps them nice and insulated in the winter and then it blows out in the Spring so they can be cool in the summer.

The more coarse hair that makes up their top coat is called guard hair and each hair is equipped with an Arrector Pili Muscles that helps them to raise and lower them to help regulate their temperature.

For this purpose and other also very important reasons such as oil disbursement, the guard hairs are designed to be longer than the undercoat. When their hair gets cut it disrupts all of this.

What double coated dogs need in the summer, is lots of brushing to help them shed out all of that thick undercoat that kept them warm in the winter. Cutting their hair also leaves them exposed to sunburn and makes it harder for them to regulate their own temperature the way God designed them to be able to.

So in conclusion, if your double coated dog is hot and their coat is maintaines properly, then it's probably just hot. If you're hot, their hot. Don't leave them out in miserable temperatures with no shade or water. Also, panting isn't a bad thing. It's what they do to help stay cool.

If you aren't sure if you have a double coated dog, the best way to tell, in my opnion, is looking at their legs. If they have naturally short hair on the fronts of their legs, they are likely double coated.

Public Announcement – In Memory of Retired K9 Piko

It is with deep sadness that the Tell City Police Department announces the passing of retired K9 Piko, who faithfully served our community from 2015 to 2022.

K9 Piko was a courageous and dedicated partner in law enforcement, playing a vital role in countless operations throughout his distinguished career. His loyalty, sharp instincts, and steadfast commitment to duty made him a valued member of the department and a beloved companion to his handler, Detective Jason Shadwick, as well as to his fellow officers.

After retiring from active duty, K9 Piko enjoyed a well-deserved life of rest and companionship. He will be remembered not only for his exceptional service but also for the enduring bond he shared with the community he helped protect.

We extend our deepest condolences to Detective Shadwick and his family, and to all who had the honor of serving alongside Piko.

Rest easy, K9 Piko. Thank you for your service—you will never be forgotten.

What a year this has been! Thank you to all of our wonderful customers for supporting us and trusting us with your pups. We also want to extend a special thanks to everyone who gave us gifts, cards, and homemade treats for Christmas. We feel so blessed. As always we will be closed until the New Year.
