A lot of puppies get punished for simply not knowing what’s expected of them yet.

And that sucks because punishment doesn’t teach puppies what to do. It only creates confusion and slows down the learning process.

In some cases, it can even lead to fear or anxiety around everyday situations.

People don’t know that puppies actually need A LOT of guidance from their guardian while they are still growing and figuring things out.

So if you’ve got a puppy, strive to meet them where they are in this moment. Focus on building that trust first. Because that is what helps learning happen faster and more smoothly.

If you’re feeling overwhelmed, you’re not alone. Raising a puppy is a learning process for both of you!

I offer Puppy School in the Metro Detroit area to help make puppy raising feel more clear and manageable. If you’re not local, I also offer virtual sessions!

Fear is an emotion, not a behavior. Emotions can be impacted by associations. If something scary is followed by something good, a process called counterconditioning can take place where the good thing rubs off on the scary thing. When that positive association is created, the fear goes away, and with it all of the fear-based behaviors.

Not only that, feeding her when she gets spooked teaches her to come to me when she’s afraid, which you can see happen in the second clip. She notices the statue, then turns to look at me.

Repeat after me: it’s okay to comfort your dog when they’re afraid. Whether that comfort comes from social support or food or both, it’s not going to reinforce or worsen their fear.

This is something that does not get talked about enough in the dog training world.

We are so often taught to zoom in on what needs to be changed or “fixed,” that we miss the bigger picture entirely.

Not every behavior is a training problem.

Some behaviors are just completely normal species behavior that only becomes “an issue” because of human expectations layered on top of it.

And when everything is framed as something to correct, it puts dog guardians in a constant state of pressure.

Like they are always behind or one mistake away from “ruining” their dog.

That is exhausting and so unnecessary.

There is a different way to live with dogs, one where safety is the priority, and everything else gets room to breathe.

Can we observe without immediately intervening?

Can we allow behaviors to exist without assigning moral weight to them?

Because I think just this mindset shift alone can change everything about how it feels to live with a dog.

What are your thoughts on this?

As behavior professionals, it’s no coincidence that a lot of our clients who come to us for behavior issues are also described as “picky eaters.” Rather than assuming this is a part of your dog’s personality, we encourage you to dig a little deeper.

“Bad breed.”

“Stubborn dog.”

“Needs to learn respect.”

“Positive training only works on easy dogs.”

I hear it all.

But none of those justifications change the reality that aversive tools and punishment are not the only option, and they are not the most effective path for long-term behavior change or emotional wellbeing.

When we zoom out, it is usually not about the dog being “too much” or “beyond help.” It is about a system that prioritizes quick suppression over understanding behavior, and control over communication.

Force free training is not about ignoring behavior. It is about reading it more clearly and actually addressing the underlying need instead of just silencing the expression of it.

So no, I am not interested in debating whether there is “a time and place” for harm-based methods.

My focus stays here: compassion and training that builds trust instead of eroding it.

If you agree with that, then you are in the right place!

Let me be clear: this is not me dismissing in-person training. What I am trying to do is shine a light on something that gets overlooked far too often: virtual training.

A lot of people assume it cannot possibly work because the trainer is not physically there. I understand why that feels like a limitation at first.

But what gets missed is that most behavior struggles happen when no trainer is present, when you are on your own, trying to figure out what to do in real time.

Virtual training is not about watching from a distance and guessing. It is about coaching you through your actual:
-environment
-routines
-triggers

So the learning happens WHERE it needs to stick.

So no, this is not about “better than” or “instead of.” It is about expanding what is possible, especially for the people who have been told it will not work for them. Because it does!

If you have a dog who barks and lunges at strangers, guards resources, or is extremely fearful, check out my virtual behavior coaching program. I provide personalized training plans that best fits you, your dog, and your life together!
