🌟 Meet Dr. Sara Porter – one of our amazing relief veterinarians at Heekin Animal Hospital! 🌟

Remember, a relief vet is like a substitute teacher for your pets!

Dr. Porter graduated from Ross University, finishing her clinical year at Michigan State. She’s especially passionate about pain management, animal behavior, and supporting both pets and their people.

Growing up on her family’s 4th generation farm in Northern Indiana sparked her lifelong love for animals. Her career has taken her across 6 states and even abroad, from serving a rural rescue group and police dogs in Indiana to now caring for pets in Northern Kentucky.

She and her husband have called this area home for three years, where they enjoy hiking with their Golden Retriever, Dakota.

We’re so grateful for Dr. Porter’s compassion and expertise—she helps our team see more patients and keeps our clinic running smoothly. 💙🐾

"I like everything! Everyone is thorough and I especially like that the approach is different—most offices just throw treatment options to the wall and see what sticks, and I feel that it’s worlds apart in terms of the decisions at Heekin Animal Hospital which are educated and informed."

Kind words from Grace, who recently brought her cat Quigley in for a visit.

🌟 Meet Dr. Maria Kohls – another wonderful relief veterinarian at Heekin Animal Hospital! 🌟

Remember, a relief (“guest” or “visiting”) vet is a licensed veterinarian who temporarily steps in to help our team.

Dr. Kohls graduated from Auburn University’s College of Veterinary Medicine in 2002. After practicing in South Carolina, she returned to her Northern Kentucky roots to raise her family and spent 16 years serving pets in Cincinnati before transitioning to relief medicine in 2021.

For Dr. Kohls, veterinary medicine is about more than treatment—it’s a calling rooted in compassion, science, and making a difference in the lives of animals and the people who love them.

Since 2021, we’ve been fortunate to have Dr. Kohls as part of our team. Her dedication and genuine care help us provide the very best for our patients, clients, and staff every day. 💙🐾

Keep Chocolate Away from Your Pets This Halloween! 🍫🚫

Even a small amount of chocolate can put your dog in the danger zone — especially darker types like baking or semi-sweet chocolate.

Symptoms of chocolate poisoning can take 6–8 hours to appear. Take a look at this infographic from the ASPCA for more information.

Celebrate safely with pet-friendly goodies instead! 🦴🎃

Before you hand out treats this Halloween, remember: chocolate and other treats that are OK for humans can be toxic to pets.

🍇 Raisins and grapes contain tartaric acid, which can cause kidney failure in dogs.

🍬 Although not all candy is toxic, wrappers can still pose a threat. Pets that swallow large amounts of foil or plastics can suffer intestinal blockages.

As an alternative, treat your pets to something safe and fun this Halloween like apple slices, blueberries, carrots, or pumpkin. 🎃🐾

Halloween Safety Reminder 🎃🐾

Sweet treats are great for us on Halloween — but they can be dangerous for pets! Even a small amount of the wrong ingredient can cause serious health problems.

🍫 Chocolate contains theobromine and caffeine, which are toxic to pets. Chocolate toxicity may cause severe abdominal or heart issues and in higher doses, can lead to death.

🍭 Xylitol is a sugar substitute commonly found in sugar-free candy. For pets, it can cause a rapid drop in blood sugar that can lead to seizures or more severe symptoms.

Keep your furry friends safe this spooky season by keeping harmful ingredients out of reach and offering pet-friendly alternatives instead. 🐶

🐾 It's time to spotlight another one of our amazing relief vets! 🩺

We’re so grateful to have Dr. Julie Dwertman as part of our Heekin Animal Hospital team! 💚

A graduate of The Ohio State University College of Veterinary Medicine, Dr. Dwertman loves the variety of animals she sees each day and helping pet owners care for their furry family members. She's been working in veterinary medicine since 2007.

Originally from Nashville, TN, she’s a former D1 softball player with a BBA in Music Business from Belmont University — and when she’s not at the clinic, you’ll likely find her cheering on the Cincinnati Reds at GABP! ⚾

Dr. Julie and her husband, Jimmy, have been married 20 years and share life with three kiddos, a senior Belgian Malinois, and an indoor/outdoor cat.

We’re thankful for Dr. Dwertman’s compassion, professionalism, and dedication to helping our patients and team. 🫶
