This story reflects the true heart of hospice care. We’re grateful for volunteers like Barbara who go above and beyond to bring comfort and connection to families during difficult moments. Keiki’s new beginning is a beautiful part of his legacy.

When a hospice patient had to leave home suddenly for inpatient care, his first concern wasn’t for himself. It was for his dog, Keiki. He had helped the Chapters Health System Pet Peace of Mind team to make sure her vet records were ready, her food and medications were ready, and that someone would come for her.

When the transport company arrived, Keiki tried to jump onto the gurney beside him. He reached out to comfort her, tears streaming down his face. He wanted so badly to say a proper goodbye to his precious girl.

Pet Peace of Mind volunteer Barbara arrived and gently gathered Keiki’s things and brought her to the hospice house so her dad could say goodbye one last time. He passed away shortly after her arrival, with peace in his heart knowing Keiki was safe and loved.

Thanks to the compassion of people like you, Keiki now has a new home and a family to help her heal.

Leonor and Izzy’s story reminds us why we do what we do. Thank you to our amazing volunteers and team for giving this family comfort and joy to the very end. This is hospice care at its most beautiful.

Last year, we shared the beautiful story of Izzy and Leonor - kept together through the loving support of Chapters Health System Pet Peace of Mind (Cornerstone Hospice) volunteers, who made sure Izzy got her daily walks so she could stay by Leonor’s side.

Update: Their love story continued!
Leonor celebrated her 100th birthday, blessed to grow old with Izzy right beside her. With the help of devoted Pet Peace of Mind volunteers, Izzy received her mid-day walk five days a week, keeping her happy, healthy, and close to the person she adored.

A heartfelt thank you to Izzy’s walking team! Together, they gave Izzy an incredible 229 walks in one year! They coordinated schedules, swapped days, and always made sure Izzy was cared for. Their visits also meant treasured moments with Leonor, who loved sharing her funny, charming stories.

Leonor became like family to the entire Cornerstone team. Although she recently passed away, her legacy of love lives on. Izzy is now with family she knows and loves, grieving but surrounded by comfort.

Thank you to the volunteers who made it possible for Leonor and Izzy to stay together. Your compassion changed their world.
