Bufo Toad Toxicity: What Every Pet Owner Should Know
Bufo toads, also known as Cane Toads, Giant Toads, or Marine Toads, are commonly found throughout Florida and can pose a serious threat to dogs and other pets. These invasive toads secrete a powerful toxin from glands located behind their eyes. Even a brief encounter can cause severe illness, and in some cases, can be fatal without immediate treatment.
Where Are Bufo Toads Found? Bufo toads are most active during warm, humid weather and are often seen at dawn, dusk, and nighttime. They are commonly found:
• Around ponds, retention areas, and stagnant water
• Under shrubs and low-hanging bushes
• Near pet food and water bowls left outdoors
• Around patios, gardens, and landscaped areas
• In neighborhoods throughout Wesley Chapel, Zephyrhills, New Tampa, and surrounding Florida communities
Signs of Bufo Toad Toxicity: If your pet licks, mouths, or bites a Bufo toad, symptoms can develop within minutes. Common signs include:
• Excessive drooling or foaming at the mouth
• Pawing at the mouth
• Bright red or dark red gums
• Disorientation or unusual behavior
• Vocalizing, whining, or agitation
• Vomiting or other gastrointestinal upset
• Tremors or seizures
• Abnormal heart rhythms
• Collapse
• Death in severe cases
What To Do If Your Pet Encounters a Bufo Toad: Immediate action can save your pet's life.
1. Thoroughly wipe the inside of your pet's mouth, lips, and gums with a wet cloth.
2. For larger dogs, gently rinse the mouth with a steady stream of water from a hose, directing the water outward so it does not flow down the throat.
3. Remove any remaining toxin from the mouth as quickly as
possible.
4. Seek veterinary care immediately.
The first 12 to 24 hours following exposure are critical. Prompt treatment significantly improves the chances of recovery.
Prevention Tips
• Supervise pets when outdoors, especially at dawn, dusk, and night.
• Keep pets away from standing water and retention ponds.
• Trim low-hanging shrubs and remove potential hiding places.
• Avoid leaving food or water bowls outside overnight.
• Use a flashlight when walking pets after dark.
