Oh my gosh!

This is what Angel looked like when she first walked through HSTB’s doors as a stray in late September. The mass hanging from her belly was inches away from touching the ground when she stood, and she tested positive for heartworm.

We don’t know much about Angel’s past or how long she’d been suffering, but we knew she needed help!❤️‍🩹Our veterinary team got right to work caring for her. We’ve started her on heartworm treatment, spayed her, surgically removed the mass, and sent it off for testing. Thankfully, the results came back as a fibroepithelial polyp, meaning it was benign!

Angel has been through so much, but she’s finally ready for her next chapter: finding a loving home!🏠

Angel will need a calm environment to rest and recover while she completes her heartworm treatment, but this sweet girl has plenty of love to give. She’s hoping someone will stop by her kennel at our Tampa Campus and choose her soon.🩷

We have more than just dogs and cats at HSTB!🐹💕

We have 25 guinea pigs available for adoption between our Pinellas and Tampa campuses, and some have been waiting for homes since July.

HSTB was delighted to host Congressman Gus Bilirakis at our Tampa shelter yesterday afternoon. We are always grateful for the opportunity to share our life-saving work with community leaders and very much appreciate the Congressman’s support for helping homeless animals in Tampa Bay. Fred and Richard, the Blue Heeler Mix puppies, were especially excited to get out of the puppy nursery for a bit to meet new friends (Fred and Richard are not available for adoption quite yet). Recently, an individual contacted us about surrendering two dachshunds. But when they arrived, they had seven dogs instead.

Sadly, one of the younger dogs was extremely ill and did not make it, despite our best efforts. 💔 Two others are now safe in foster homes, and the remaining pups are looking for their second chance. Some are dealing with skin issues that will require extra care and attention.

These dachshunds are also a little timid around people. They’ll need patient, understanding families who are willing to go slowly, give them space, and let trust develop on their terms. They may not be ready to show their full personalities right away, but they deserve the chance to feel safe and loved.

We believe the person who surrendered them may have been experiencing homelessness and we empathize with his difficult situation. We also do not believe these are the same dogs involved in the hoarding case from August.

💛 Sometimes, love means letting go, even when it breaks your heart. 😭

This is Bodhi, a 3-year-old Golden Retriever who was surrendered to our Pinellas Campus with a heart full of love and energy. Sadly, his beloved owner is undergoing chemotherapy, and as they navigate this difficult fight, Bodhi’s exuberant greetings and playful paws have become too much to safely manage at home.

This isn’t a story of a family that stopped loving their dog. It’s a story of a family facing more than anyone should have to bear, and a heartbreaking decision made out of love, safety, and necessity. Our heart goes out to this family during this difficult time. 💔

Now, Bodhi is waiting at our Pinellas campus for a new family that will embrace his joyful and playful spirit. Please help us find him a happy ending 🥹

Join us next Saturday, October 24, from 10 AM–1 PM for an extra special Paws for Literacy event with the Junior League of Tampa.

Bring your little animal lovers (ages 4-10) for an opportunity to improve their reading skills while visiting friendly, adoptable pets in a relaxed environment. Each child will receive a free book, make treats for the animals, and enjoy some yummy Fall treats themselves.

We noticed something wasn't quite right with Harley's eyes...

This 3.5-year-old Terrier mix was surrendered to HSTB in September due to financial hardship. During his exam, our veterinary team discovered that Harley had entropion, a condition where the eyelids roll inward, causing irritation and potentially damaging the cornea if left untreated.

Harley underwent surgery through our animal hospital, where a small amount of eyelid tissue was removed to help reposition his eyelids and protect the eyes. After about a month of healing, he's finally ready for adoption!

Meet Blaze and Maverick, two big, beautiful husky boys who were surrendered to HSTB because their owner didn't have enough time for them.

A wonderful couple stopped by with their hearts set on meeting Maverick. But when they discovered he had a furmate (Blaze), they knew they had to meet them both! After spending time together and taking the boys on a few walks, they knew they were going home with two huskies instead of one. 🥹❤️

Their new family is ready for twice the fur and double the husky antics. Sometimes, the best things come in pairs. 🐾❤️

Happy Tails for Starla!🐾

Jenny, now Starla, is a deaf Australian Shepherd mix who was surrendered to us as a puppy because her special needs felt too challenging for her previous family.

Thankfully, Starla found a family who saw her potential and was willing to learn right alongside her! 💕 Through patience, love, and doggie sign language, Starla has mastered sit, down, stay, come, give paw! Her family celebrates her success with a thumbs-up and plenty of treats. 👍🐶

Starla has a wonderful personality! She’s curious, playful, loves belly rubs, gives the sweetest doggie kisses, and gets along beautifully with her two canine sisters and one canine brother. She loves chasing and retrieving tennis balls, playing tug-of-war with her furry and human family members, and going on walks to explore all the exciting new smells around her. She’s also friendly with both adults and children!

We couldn’t be happier that Starla has found a family who embraces her unique needs, celebrates her accomplishments, and gives her the wonderful life she deserves. ❤️

Congratulations, Starla and family! We’re so happy for you all! 🏡🐾💖
