Not all superheroes wear capes – some donate blood 🩸

After serious post-surgery complications left Kayle weak and fighting for her life, she needed an emergency blood transfusion. Thankfully, Duke, one of our biggest residents, answered the call. 📞

This feline hero gave Kayle a second chance. Today, she is doing much better, eating on her own, and continues to recover thanks to Duke’s lifesaving gift and the care of our medical team.❤️‍🩹

Duke has since hung up his cape after being adopted this weekend. Kayle is still recovering but hopes to return to the loving arms of the person who found her. 🐾

If you were watching us on FOX 13 News - Tampa Bay Pet of the Week this past Wednesday, you may have seen what appeared to be a couple of fluffy ponies on set.📺

Correction: they were Great Pyrenees dogs. Not ponies. Technically. 🐶

The day before their TV debut, these two decided to dig themselves a nice cool spot in the sand and roll around in it. As one does.

What you didn’t see was the blizzard that hit our play yard. ❄️ Florida snow is rare, but when Absol and Bailey get a bath, blow dry and a thorough brushing from some of our volunteers, the amount of fluff floating through the air might convince you otherwise. We’re not sure the volunteers even made a dent. 😉

Absol (female, 9 years old) and Bailey (male, 6 years old) were recently surrendered to our Hillsborough campus after their owner made the difficult decision to seek help when he could no longer care for them. They’re now looking for a new place to call home.

If you know Great Pyrenees, you know they’re loyal guardian dogs and independent thinkers. They’re not the type to spend all day chasing tennis balls. In fact, these two would rather supervise the yard from a comfortable spot in the shade.

Bailey is a little more reserved than his extroverted sister and takes some time to warm up to new people. Absol is a professional attention hog. If you stop scratching her before she’s ready, she’ll politely nudge your hand until you understand your mistake.

Both of these fluffy giants are ready to trade their TV fame for a forever family and a couch. Come meet Absol and Bailey, and you’ll understand why our volunteers didn’t mind being buried in dog hair for a day.

We are so thankful to a local resident, Kim, for her generosity to our shelter dogs! She recently organized a donation drive through her company and personally delivered all of the collected items to help our shelter pets. But she didn’t stop there. Wanting to do something extra special, she treated some of our longest residents to delicious goodies from her favorite doggie bakery, Sweet Dog, the same one she spoils her own pets with!

For everyone who thinks we never have small dogs available for adoption, here are 8 of them!🐾

If you check our website and don’t see them listed, chances are you’re already too late. Unfortunately for our larger dogs, that’s just the reality: small dogs tend to get adopted much faster.

Meanwhile, larger breeds, adult or senior dogs, bully breed mixes, and dogs with medical needs tend to spend the longest time waiting for a home.

A tip for anyone looking to adopt: check our adoptables page late at night before you go to bed or early in the morning before we open. New animals are often added during those times, and getting an early look can make all the difference.

If you’ve been thinking about adopting, keep an eye on our website, research different breeds, understand your housing’s pet restrictions, and make sure you’re prepared for the financial and time commitments that come with pet ownership. The best adoptions happen when both the animal and adopter are set up for success!
