🦎 Did You Know? Bearded Dragons Have a “Third Eye”! 👁️

Bearded dragons have a special light-sensing organ on the top of their head called the parietal eye—often referred to as their “third eye.” While it doesn’t see images, it helps detect changes in light and shadows, playing an important role in regulating day/night cycles and alerting them to potential predators from above.

This is why sudden overhead movements or shadows can startle your beardie, and why proper lighting is so important for their overall health and behavior. Knowledge like this helps us better understand and care for these amazing reptiles! 💚

Thankyou Eye Care for Animals - Chicago, IL for creating this post about our feline friends third eye lids!

Cats have a third eyelid called the nictitating membrane!
It helps keep their eyes moist and protected.
If it’s visible often, though, it could be a sign of illness — bring your kitty in for a check-up! 🐾

👁️ Spotlight on Corneal Sequestrum in Cats 🐾

Corneal sequestrum is a condition where a small area of the cornea (the clear front part of the eye) becomes damaged and darkened. It’s most common in cats, especially Persians, Himalayans, and Burmese. Signs to watch for include squinting, tearing, eye discharge, or a brown/black spot on the cornea.

Treatment often involves a surgical procedure called a keratectomy to remove the affected tissue, relieve discomfort, and promote healing. In deeper cases, a graft may be needed to strengthen the cornea. Most surgeries are very successful, though, as with any procedure, there are potential risks.

If you notice any changes in your cat’s eyes, prompt evaluation by a veterinary ophthalmologist is essential to protect their vision and comfort. 💙

🐾 We had the pleasure of seeing three amazing canine patients for their eye exams! Two of these brave pups also lent a paw to help with our corneal sensitivity study 🐶✨

Each one was calm, cooperative, and an absolute joy to work with — true professionals in their own right! We're so grateful to their humans for trusting us with their care and for contributing to research that helps advance veterinary ophthalmology.

Here’s to healthy eyes and wagging tails! 👁️❤️🐾
