Helping pets and the people who love them live healthier, happier, more intentional lives. My name is Liz, and for more than 30 years I have dedicated my heart to raising healthy, well-loved Dachshunds through **My Little Dachshund Heaven**, now a division of **Hart Way LLC**. What began with a deep love for this breed h

as grown into a larger mission: to support both *pets and their people* in living healthier, more intentional lives. I am a certified pet nutritionist, pet wellness educator, ethical breeder, and holistic health advocate. Over the years, I discovered that caring for puppies naturally opened the door to caring for entire families — guiding them not only through puppyhood and nutrition, but through wellness choices that improve their own lives as well. I believe that when we nurture ourselves, we better nurture the pets who depend on us. And when our pets thrive, our homes feel healthier, calmer, and more connected. Through My Little Dachshund Heaven, I raise genetically sound Dachshund puppies in a peaceful, structured environment designed to support their earliest development. Every breeding decision is intentional, every puppy is supported with individualized care, and every family receives guidance for the lifetime of their dog (as long as I am alive). Through Hart Way LLC, I extend that same heart-led approach to the people behind the pets — sharing tools for holistic well-being, nutrition, mindset, and daily practices that help individuals and families live fuller, healthier lives. This page is the place where both worlds now meet:
🐾 ethical breeding
🌱 pet wellness
💛 holistic health for pet parents
✨ lifelong support and education

My passion is simple: **Healthier pets. Healthier homes.**
All connected, all intentional, and all supported with heart. Welcome to My Little Dachshund Heaven — and to the larger Hart Way family.

The Doxie Pile Challenge 🐾🛋️

As the evening progresses… the pile keeps changing.
Or does it? 👀

Now I’m adding ANOTHER photo to increase the level of difficulty 😂

The question is:

🐶 Did the number of dogs change between the photos?
🐶 Or are they simply changing positions and disappearing into the dachshund cuddle vortex?

Your mission:
✔ Count how many dogs are in EACH photo
✔ Decide whether the number changes
✔ Try not to lose your mind counting ears, noses, tails, and random paws 😅

Fair warning:
Some dachshunds may be partially buried beneath other dachshunds.
This is an advanced-level doxie puzzle. Proceed at your own risk.

Spot the difference… or maybe don’t? 👀🐾

Okay friends, I need your help with this one 😂

Did the number of dachshunds change between photo #1 and photo #2… or did everyone just rearrange themselves like a furry game of Tetris?

Now for the real challenge:
🐶 How many dogs do you count in the FIRST photo?
🐶 How many do you count in the SECOND photo?

Bonus points if you can identify who moved where 🤣

Living with dachshunds is basically:
• counting noses
• checking under blankets
• wondering whose tail belongs to who
• and realizing personal space is no longer yours 😅

Reducing Ticks Around Your Home

Tick prevention doesn’t start with your dog, it starts in the environment too. 🌿

Ways to help reduce ticks around your property:
✔️ Keep grass trimmed
✔️ Remove leaf piles and brush
✔️ Limit tall weeds
✔️ Create barriers between wooded areas and play areas
✔️ Check pets after outdoor time
✔️ Wash bedding regularly
✔️ Use plants like lavender and catmint to create a barrier

No method is perfect, but layering prevention strategies helps tremendously.

Signs of Lyme Disease

One of the tricky things about Lyme disease is that symptoms may not appear immediately after a tick bite.

Things to watch for:
⚠️ Lethargy
⚠️ Fever
⚠️ Limping or shifting leg soreness
⚠️ Loss of appetite
⚠️ Swollen joints
⚠️ Sensitivity to touch

If your dog seems “off” after a tick bite, it’s always worth speaking with your veterinarian.

Early treatment matters.

How to Safely Remove a Tick

Found a tick? Don’t panic. The key is removing it properly.

✔️ Use fine-tip tweezers or a tick remover tool
✔️ Grab the tick as close to the skin as possible
✔️ Pull upward slowly and steadily
✔️ Clean the area afterward

Avoid:
❌ Twisting
❌ Crushing the tick
❌ Burning it
❌ Smothering it with petroleum jelly

If part of the tick remains or the area becomes irritated, contact your veterinarian.

Where Ticks Hide on Dogs”

Ticks LOVE warm hidden areas… and sometimes they’re easy to miss!

When checking your dog, pay extra attention to:
🐾 Around the ears
🐾 Under collars
🐾 Between toes
🐾 Armpits
🐾 Groin area
🐾 Around the tail
🐾 Around the eyes and lips

Daily tick checks are one of the simplest and most effective habits during tick season.

The faster a tick is found and removed, the lower the risk of disease transmission.

I wanted to make a follow-up post regarding Tiana and Cadence and explain why neither girl has been spayed yet.

Both girls have had recent litters, and in my program it is very important to me that my females are given the proper time to fully recover from pregnancy, whelping, nursing, and raising their puppies before undergoing a spay procedure. Their bodies go through a tremendous amount physically, hormonally, and emotionally during motherhood. I do not rush this process simply to make a dog “ready” to leave sooner. Their long-term health and overall well-being will always come first. ❤️

I’ve had some questions regarding whether my retired adults leave already altered or not, and honestly, I am comfortable either way depending on what the new family prefers. Some families prefer adopting an intact adult and having the procedure done through their own veterinarian. Others prefer the dog already being spayed prior to going home.

There is a cost difference between those options that many people may not realize. When a dog leaves already spayed/neutered, the adoption fee reflects:
• the surgical procedure itself
• pre-surgical veterinary care
• post-operative care and healing time
• and the additional time the dog remains in my care during recovery

Over the years I have placed retired adults both ways successfully. This post is simply meant to provide a little more education and transparency regarding why Tiana and Cadence have not yet been spayed.

At the end of the day, every decision I make for my dogs is centered around what is best for them first. ❤️

Meanwhile… the “starving” dachshunds have gathered at the gate like they’ve never been fed a day in their lives. 😂🌭

Mom decided to take a few minutes to relax in the massage chair before making dinner, and apparently the entire crew felt the need to supervise the situation very closely. They are literally stacked on top of each other in the dining room waiting as patiently as dachshunds possibly can for supper.

The drama.
The judgement.
The tiny noses pressed forward in anticipation. 🤣

Honestly though… moments like this make my heart happy. Silly dogs, full of personality, keeping life entertaining every single day. ❤️

Tick Season Is Here

Goal: Awareness + introduction to the series

Tick season is officially here in Pennsylvania… and this year is already looking like a busy one. 🕷️🐾

Ticks are more than just a nuisance. They can carry illnesses that affect both pets and people, which is why prevention, daily checks, and early detection matter so much.

Over the next couple posts I’ll be sharing:
✔️ How to safely check your dog for ticks
✔️ Areas ticks love to hide
✔️ Natural ways to help reduce ticks around your home
✔️ Preventatives to discuss with your vet
✔️ Proper tick removal
✔️ Signs of Lyme disease and other tick-borne illnesses

Knowledge is one of the best tools we have as pet owners. ❤️

Stay tuned for this educational series!

🎓 Today’s Lesson: What SAFE Play Looks Like… and When It’s No Longer Fun 🐾

Dogs can sound scary when they play! Growling, chasing, wrestling, pawing, and even gentle mouthy “biting” are all very normal parts of healthy dog play. In fact, many dogs sound much more dramatic than they actually are 😅

So how do you tell the difference between SAFE play and a situation that is becoming too intense?

✅ Signs of healthy, safe play:
• Loose, wiggly body language
• Taking turns chasing or being “on top”
• Play bows (front end down, butt up)
• Pauses and breaks between wrestling
• Relaxed faces and soft eyes
• Dogs willingly returning for more interaction
• Sneezing, bouncing, or exaggerated movements to say “I’m just playing!”

⚠️ Signs play may no longer be safe or enjoyable:
• One dog constantly trying to escape or hide
• Stiff body posture or frozen movements
• Hard staring or raised hackles
• Growling that becomes deeper, more intense, or paired with tension
• One dog repeatedly pinning or bullying another without breaks
• Yelping followed by continued pressure from the other dog
• Lip lifting, snapping with intent, or true correction behavior
• No “give and take” between the dogs

One of the biggest things I watch for is whether BOTH dogs are still choosing to participate. Healthy play has balance and mutual engagement. Good dog communication can look loud and chaotic to humans sometimes, but experienced dog owners learn to read the body language behind the noise.

Remember: not every growl is aggression, and not every quiet dog is comfortable.

Learning canine body language is one of the best things a dog owner can do! 🐶❤️
