This is the stability we have bred and trained for!!! Who would have thought my toughest Coyote dog would also be my best flock guardian?! I couldn’t be more pleased with Omen and his work here on the farm. He is a forward and highly defensive guardian and he’s an absolute monster on predators. I’m going to start working with the girls and the chickens more heavily now that Omen is as solid as they get. He is with the birds 24/7. He guards 9 adult birds and 16 pullets. While he’s guarding the birds, he’s also watching out for the cattle and has the pulse of the whole operation. He’s also heavily invested in guarding the barn cats, we haven’t had a loss in 5 years. His parents and older sibling are to thank for that as well. I prefer a terrier that can kill with discrimination. At 2 years old I genuinely could not be more pleased with him. It’s taken a lot of work but every pulled muscle, every training sessions, every exhausted moment has been WORTH IT.

Omen coming back in to check his flock after he air scented and investigated a possible concern. After making sure there are no threats, he promptly returns to snag some of their breakfast 😅. Chicken feed is apparently delicious.

Why are Armadillos considered a problem animal on a farm? While Armadillos are a vital part of the ecosystem they are not an animal you want residing on your farm. That is because Armadillos are more voracious diggers than terriers. They dig deep holes that are camouflaged by the native grasses. Those holes become leg breakers for horses and cattle. Cattle feeds America and a leg break means you loose that animal. A leg break in a horse is a done deal 98% of the time. Often times you cannot even have the cattle processed because they have to be able to walk off the trailer unassisted.
Using Airedales to combat varmint like Armadillos, means no poison and no waiting up at night to catch a shot. We do not develop a resident population on our property because the dogs take care of them quickly. Additionally, the dogs do not make an impact on the ecosystem as a whole, as they’re only targeting them on property.
How did I know we had something that needed attention at midnight? The dogs on duty outside alerted in a very excited tone and continued for a bit. That means whatever it was, wasn’t moving off. I let Alden and Dax out the front door and they zipped around back immediately. So I knew that something was close, but given the excitement in their tone, I was sure it wasn’t a predator and I got curious. I went out back to find them on dispatch.
Dax got in on this one and I was extremely pleased with his stability during the fight. He was an asset to Aldi, not a hindrance. The training I’ve put in on him is showing and I couldn’t be more excited.

Look at this dude’s teeth and bite capacity 🤯. It’s really humbling to have dog the could easily crush my arm be ever so gentle with me 😅. Omen said, show them my pretty teefers mom!

For the record I’m not recommending everyone play with their dog this way 🙂. If your dog has no mental or emotional stability and/or your dog is not trained, fix those issues first.

I need that audio that says, “we just let him do what he wants…” Bear really doesn’t have to do anything except live his best life. We ask very little of him, he’s been through the wringer. And asking very little of him has allowed him to relax and feel comfortable and safe. The pups are growing up everyday, and they’ve become much more aware and gentle with Bear. We still have quite a bit of grooming to do on him, bc it’s going at a snails pace on his hind end. But that’s okay, he’s happy with a snails pace. I never imagined we’d get here with him. He never ceases to amaze me. Long live Bear aka Bearski and Hutch.

Below is an example of a training session. They are not fancy, they look kinda boring, but it’s the most important kind of training (in this stage of their training). I want to see what we need to work on, what trained behaviors have now became their base line behavior, and how each dog is working alone and within the pack. In these videos I’m standing between my chicken coop and a calf. These three dogs are two year old siblings from the same litter, two females and a male. I might’ve said two words to them and they worked seamlessly without input or correction. They always left one or two dogs back with me while the other/s ranged out. I do not command them to stay back with me, they do it instinctively. That is a successful session in our book.

When raising working dogs and having the number we do, life can get overwhelming. It’s imperative to stay grateful in the moment and as a whole. Remember, all you have was once a prayer and now your prayers are answered, in the flesh, standing before you. MAKE THE MOST OF EVERY MOMENT, and enjoy the fruits of your labor. Thanks for coming to my ted talk!

Omen, had a little case of FOMO today. As I headed to town with Aldi, I got about a half mile and looked back to find Omen hauling a** after the truck. That’s the first time he’s done that. Don’t worry, we’ll nip that in the bud. I had him run back home (no truck ride reward), secured him, and headed back out. I was taking “his Shaylaaaaaaaa”, iykyk. His teenager brain got the best of him. You can run the tightest ship and pups are still going to make bad decisions at times. Look for those moments as an opportunity to make you and your dog better.

I think the truck might give away that we run dogs… can y’all see the scratches from the dogs bailing out the bed, and of course they take the shortest route to do so? 😅. I’ve found I can either have nice things or I can run dogs. But I have a life I don’t need a vacation from. How bout y’all?

Aldi wasn’t vibing with the photo shoot 🤣
