About Scent Evidence K9

CEO Paul Coley founded Scent Evidence K9 in 2012 to help communities and law enforcement agencies improve their methods of locating missing persons by developing innovative and effective systems of scent discriminate K9 training and scent collection technology. Paul is a former FBI Forensic Canine Operations Specialist and has dedicated his entire career to public service

in the fields of education, law enforcement, criminal justice, investigations, forensics, and emergency management. The life-saving Scent Preservation Kit® provides families and caregivers with a way to prepare and protect loved ones before they go missing. The Scent Kit is used to pre-collect a person’s unique scent and store it for up to 10 years. The process only takes a few minutes to complete and allows K9 responders to begin searching for a missing or wandering person immediately with an uncontaminated scent article. Having a Scent Kit prepared in advance increases location success and reduces recovery time. Scent Kits are used by law enforcement K-9 responders throughout the world to locate those with Alzheimer’s Disease or autism who are at high risk of wandering. Scent Evidence K9 provides world-class trained scent discriminate and scent detection K-9s, handler training and certification, and Missing Person Response Protocol training for law enforcement agencies and professional SAR Teams across the U.S. Scent Evidence K9 also developed “The SEKR” Scent Evidence Collection Vacuum that is utilized by K9 Search teams to collect uncontaminated human scent at the scene for highly successful forensics and search applications. Scent Evidence K9 Bloodhound, Stella, won the 2020 AKC ACE Award – Uniformed Services Division for her successes in locating multiple missing persons and suspects for the Tallahassee Police Dept. Scent Evidence partnered with Florida lawmaker, Rep. Scott Plakon, to pass the Bringing the Lost Home Project bill in Florida to increase awareness of wandering risks in populations with Alzheimer’s Disease, related dementia, and autism. Bringing The Lost Home Project implements Scent Kit programs to participating counties that allow these populations to pre-collect their scent and store it for use by responders if they go missing. The project also provides advanced scent discriminate K9 training to agency K9 Units to improve and enhance missing person response. Scent Evidence K9 has partnered with the Florida Dept. of Elder Affairs, Alzheimer’s Association, Dementia Care and Cure Initiative Task Force, and The Alzheimer’s Project to raise awareness about wandering safety and prevention methods and the missing person reporting guidelines. They have also pioneered the integration of drone technology into the K9 Trailing process with the FSU Emergency Management and Homeland Security Department to create greater situational awareness and safer working conditions for handlers and dogs. It’s Bloodhound Time in Tennessee! Jonesboro PD Bloodhound Team Uses SEKR to Locate Evidence and Suspect! On 8-13-25 Officer Adam Depew and K9 Daryl, a Scent Evidence K9 alumnus, responded to help locate a suspect who fled after a traffic stop. The suspect was last seen running down a highway and into a field. Ofc. Depew collected scent from the suspect’s vehicle using the SEKR Scent Evidence Vacuum and presented the scent jar to K9 Daryl. K9 Daryl trailed 500 feet into an open field and located a hat belonging to the suspect along the way. The East TN Bloodhound team continued trailing for approximately 2500 ft and located the suspect concealed under brush. The suspect was taken into custody without further incident.

“We use the phrase Good Start, Good Finish, Bad Start, No Finish in our training seminars. Ofc. Depew used the SEKR to collect an effective uncontaminated scent article before deploying. This helped to give them a Good Start to locate the suspect quickly,” stated Scent Evidence K9 CEO, Paul Coley.
Great Trail Ofc. Depew and K9 Daryl and thanks to the Jonesboro Police Department for their commitment to creating a safer community. To learn more about the SEKR visit ScentEvidenceK9.com

One of the most frequently asked questions we get about our Scent Kits is:

Question: Why is a Scent Kit better than an article of clothing?

Answer: A SEK9 Scent Kit ONLY contains the unique scent of the person who it was completed for. An article of clothing from the person may have been touched by several family members, caretakers, pets, or responders before being presented to the dog.

Having a Scent Kit prepared in advance gives responders an uncontaminated scent that is more effective for the dog to trail and it also saves time so that the search can begin quickly to bring a missing or wandering person home safe. During these summer months where temps can be extreme, every minute counts when searching for an elderly person with Alzheimer's Disease or a child with autism.

WOW! Our Liberty County Sheriff's Office Bringing The Lost Home Partners Sgt. Carter and K9 Legend quickly find a missing elderly man in 100 degree temps! Fantastic Trailing Work!

A Safe Return, Thanks to Teamwork

Yesterday, the Bryan County Sheriff's Office responded to a call about a missing elderly man enrolled in our Project Lifesaver program - a system designed to help us quickly locate individuals with cognitive conditions who are prone to wandering.

When deputies arrived, they learned the man’s Project Lifesaver bracelet had been removed the day before and left inside the home. With no signal to track, time became even more critical, especially given the dangerous heat.

BCSO reached out to our neighbors at the Liberty County Sheriff’s Office, who immediately offered assistance. Their tracking K9, Legend, and his handler, Sergeant Carter, responded without hesitation.

After providing K9 Legend with the man’s scent, he led a team directly into the woods behind the residence. Just 7 minutes after beginning the track, K9 Legend, Sergeant Carter, BCSO’s Sergeant G.D. Eason, and Lieutenant Burns successfully located the missing man about 100 yards into the woods behind his home.

With temperatures over 100°, this could have had a very different outcome. Thanks to quick thinking, seamless collaboration between agencies , and the nose of a true hero, he was returned home safely.

We are incredibly grateful to Sergeant Carter, K9 Legend, and the entire team at Liberty County SO for their support and partnership.

K9 Buster Hot On The Trail of Escaped Subject in Escambia County, Florida! Escambia County Sheriff’s Deputy, Kathryn Touchstone, and K9 Buster responded to help locate a subject who escaped a facility on 7/10/25. Dep. Touchstone collected a scent article and presented it to K9 Buster, a scent discriminate Beagle. The Florida K9 Team trailed 1.77 miles through a heavily foot trafficked area to a lot across from a mobile home park. Due to the midday Florida heat and the amount of time trailing on hot urban surfaces at that point, Dep. Touchstone stopped to give Buster a rest. Patrol Units located the escaped subject in the mobile home park a short time later. “Dep. Touchstone not only used her advanced scent discriminate K9 trailing skills to determine the direction of travel, but she also used her knowledge of K9 safety to keep Buster healthy for the next trail. Their trailing work helped place search resources in the area where the subject was located,” stated Scent Evidence K9 CEO, Paul Coley.
