Please join us in welcoming Dr. Grace Mercer to the Button Vet team! Dr. Mercer is a 2025 graduate of the Iowa State University College of Veterinary Medicine, where she was the recipient of the Robert Edwin Gamble, DVM Scholarship which recognizes outstanding students in their final year of studies.

She grew up in a small town on the Illinois/Iowa border, and lived on a hog farm until she was 6 years old. Later, she showed pigs through 4H and FFA. She also attended Iowa State University for her undergraduate degree and during her freshman year she shadowed her hometown vet and within her first hour she was helping revive puppies from a c-section. She was hooked and the rest is history!

Dr. Mercer has a 5-year old golden retriever named Keeper and is looking forward to being able to enjoy all that the PNW outdoors has to offer! Call to schedule an appointment to meet Dr. Mercer and update your pet's annual exam and preventive care!

If you know of anyone who might be interested in adopting these two lovely pups, please share this post from Old Dog Haven.

Good Friday Morning Friends.
Today we are hoping you'll help us get the word out about Penny and Toby.
They are now living in a motel with their owner who was able to get a later deployment date but only by a week!! These wonderful dogs really need to find an adoptive home! Can you help make today the day Penny and Toby find their adopter??

Bonded buddies Penny and Toby are in need of an adoptive home in a very short time frame. Penny is not a senior at only 6 years old, but her buddy Toby is a senior at 10 years old. Toby weighs 55 pounds, Penny weighs 44 pounds. Not too big, not too small- just right!

Penny and Toby are beautiful dogs who sound like such a nice pair.

Toby is described as being a calm guy who enjoys cuddles. Penny is a very loving girl who, as one would expect, has more energy. The pair has lived together for 5 years. Penny was adopted in Washington in 2020. Toby was adopted from a rescue in Montana in 2015. Their human is in the military. In the past they have stayed with people temporarily while their owner was on deployment. This time, their owner is being sent on deployment and after that is being moved to a place where the dogs cannot come along. For this reason, the dogs must find a new home.

When meeting new dogs, Toby keeps to himself. He is not a fan of sharing his toys or food with other dogs (totally understandable!). Penny is a social butterfly, enjoying other non-aggressive dogs. The pair has lived with indoor/outdoor cats. Toby ignores the cats, whereas Penny will play with a kitty if they initiate it. These friends have been good with the child in their home, Toby especially enjoys attention from the child.

Daily walks are part of Penny's schedule. Toby goes for a walk every other day as he cannot walk as long and far as Penny can. Both can pull some in excitement while on leash, so one should be able to manage that. Perhaps no-pull harness could help, and time to teach better leash skills could make the walks even more enjoyable. They sound like good dogs who will want to please their new people and enjoy new places to sniff and explore.

We are told that Penny rarely barks but Toby gives a hound howl when people knock at their door. They have been crate-trained and can manage quite a few hours between potty breaks. Ideally, neither would have to hold it too long but since Toby is a senior, we want to remind that it's harder for older dogs to have to wait to relieve themselves.

Both dogs are up to date on vaccines. It has been 4 years since Toby has had lab work or a urinalysis done at his vet. We would recommend this be done by his adopter as it will give the best picture of his overall health. One should be able to commit to lifelong vet care and good quality dog food for both dogs.

Because they have stayed in different homes during their owner's deployments, we would hope rehoming could go smoother for them than most dogs. Penny and Toby have proven their adaptability when necessary. Of course, we still ask that an adopter show compassion and understanding with their rehoming. We would all hope for that with a major life change, right?

Penny and Toby are located in Spanaway, WA. For contact information, please email: [email protected]

These are not Old Dog Haven dogs. Old Dog Haven has not assessed these dogs for medical issues and will not be responsible for medical care after adoption. We urge prospective adopters to do their own evaluation.

Check out these tips for helping your dogs deal with the fireworks this coming week.

If you have used prescription medications for fireworks/noise phobia in the past, be sure to call us for a refill before the end of day on Monday July 1st. We receive a large number of requests and want to make sure we have time to get them all filled!

If you haven't used prescription medications in the past and your dog has an extreme response to noise/fireworks, call us first thing Monday morning to see if we can get you in for an urgent care appointment to get assessed for medication.

As always, give us a call with any questions!
