Unleashed, A Dog Park Community Project

Unleashed, A Dog Park Community Project This page is dedicated to getting a better dog park in Jackson County. With enough community support we can show how desperately it's needed! Hello!

We are a group of concerned, loving dog owners who have come together to move the county toward getting a dog park that is more fitting to the growing dog owner community. Mission Statement:

To establish a fenced in, off-leash dog park where well-behaved canine citizens can exercise in a clean, safe environment without endangering or inconveniencing other people, damaging property or disturbing

wildlife habitats. To develop a well-maintained space open to all dogs and dog enthusiasts who are willing to uphold the park's rules and regulations. To view this park as a community project, in partnership with Jackson County, designed to satisfy the needs of dog-owners as well as non-dog owners. First of all, we would like to thank county for providing the dog run we currently have. Without this space, we wouldn't have any area to take our dogs off leash. That being said, more and more responsible dog owners are bringing their dog to exercise there, which really highlight the negatives about the space. Due to the conditions of the current dog run we’d like to bring these items to your attention:
-Safety Issues
*No lights
*Rogue softballs
*Holes and rocks and really tall grass at times
*Random children due to proximity to playground
*No differentiation between large and small dog areas,
or simply not large enough to separate dogs from each other
*Not graded properly / poor drainage … becomes a mud pit after raining

-No reliable water source
-Parking is difficult due to games and city events / parking at own risk due to fly balls.
-Not large enough for the volume of dogs that come at peak hours.
-Not large enough to throw a ball without hitting a tree, person, or other dog

The following are what we anticipate incorporating in a new park (but not limited to):

-One Acre or more of land surrounded by a 4-6 foot chain link fence. The fence should be equipped with a double-gated entry and have a cemented or imbedded fence line.
-Doggie bags, trash cans, hand sanitizer
-Shade for both owners and the dogs. Benches and tables.
-Water source - with proper drainage
-Grassy area that is mowed routinely and has adequate drainage.
-Parking and public facilities close by.
-LIGHTS
-Signs that specify park hours and rules.
-Divided area for “small” and “large” dogs. This gives the option to choose based on play style and the option to close one off while the grass grows back or maintenance in one area.
-Agility obstacles in an area of the park.
-Bushes along fence line for street private, additional shade, and noise buffering.

Hey everyone, if you are a beer or wine drinker, hope to see you at one or both of these events….

I am a bit tardy in getting this first one out there for one event, as it is TONIGHT. Come have a beer at Balsam Falls in downtown Sylva tonight between 6pm and 9:30pm, and a percentage of those proceeds will be donated to our friends at ARF. They work tirelessly in our community to find new homes for otherwise unwanted animals, and, they help to keep kennels open at our VERY SMALL animal shelter. Just think, you will be supporting a local business, as well as a local non-profit, and you get to drink delicious beer. WIN-WIN for everyone!!!

The next event will be on August 6th from noon through 10pm at the Mountain Layers brewery in Bryson City. See the attached flyer for more details, but, the brewery will be also donating a portion of their proceeds that day to the PAWS Animal Shelter in Bryson City. As most of you know, PAWS is the ONLY animal welfare organization in Bryson City, they do NOT have animal control there. So, if you are able to come out and support them, PLEASE DO! There is a huge need in Swain County, so, if you like beer and animals, you need to be there!!!

That’s all I know for now, thanks everyone. If you cannot attend these events, you can still help by SHARING them!!

Have a great rest of your week,

Pat

Hey everyone, it was just brought to my attention that individuals have been seen attempting to steal dogs from East LaPorte Park, and from what I was told, several dogs WERE taken. The vehicles reported were a grey Ford truck, a blue truck, and a red car. (models of blue truck and red car unknown)

PLEASE keep your dogs secured, and keep an EYE ON THEM when you are out, whether at East LaPorte, or really, anywhere else.

Please share this with ANYONE you know that has a dog(s) in our area, and even OUTSIDE our area. This is seriously very scary.

Thanks, and I REMAIN vigilant in keeping our pets safe!!!!

I went out this evening and found lots of human trash all over the park. Not everyone thinks that their dog should be playing with plastic bottles. If its a toy for your pup, please throw it away on your way out.

And FYI I've been told by Parks and Rec that ALL Sylva parks are smoke free, I don't care when people smoke but you can't leave the butts for our pets to find. Please help out, Thank you !!!!!

Philip will also cover:
Articles supporting delayed spay/neuter or lack of spay/neuter

Rusty Ellis has already reached out to let me know that Middle School softball plans to begin in Feb. And we can not use the field. Buy maybe we will be extended the use of the field this fall.

Don't forget that tomorrow is our last day on the big field. Please respect their wishes and maybe with good behavior we can get another month or two!
Thank you to those who helps keep the field clean. We all appreciate your dedication to making this work. Thank you!

Hey everyone, HAPPY NEW YEAR! Please take a look at the photo of a very sweet female mixed breed dog that was just found on Allen Street near Chipper Curve in downtown Sylva. She has a nice collar on, but no identification. If you recognize this dog, or know who her people are, please contact Suzanne Saucier at 202-246-5887, we'd LOVE to get this girl home. She seems to have a minor injury to her front and back leg, as she is limping.

PLEASE SHARE so we can get her home and to a vet!
Let’s hope this is a year that by sharing, we can reunite MORE dogs with their families.

With Continued Gratitude to you all,

I have a Snuggly Fox/Side Sleeper ! How about you?

Because our pets can’t directly tell us things about them, sometimes we as pet owners have to take it upon ourselves to do some digging, while paying attention to key clues. And those clues can sometimes come from some pretty unlikely places. Take, for instance, the position that your dog sleeps i...

Great news everyone! We have been granted permission to use the baseball field adjacent to the dog park from now until the end of January ONLY!!

We , as responsible pet owners, need to help take care of the field in order to ensure the use of the field in the future!

Help out by :
-pick up ALL dog waste. Even if its not your pups.

-do NOT allow Digging!!!
If you see a dog that looks like a digger, discourage the behavior and make the owner aware.

-do not leave human trash!!! Cigarette butts, drink bottles, wrapers, etc.

-make others aware- spread the word so we can continue the use of the facility. And let others know when their dog isn't following the rules !

HOORAY PROGRESS!!!
