📋 PCR Test Results Are In !
We just got the PCR test results back for the kittens we've been treating, and they came back positive for cryptosporidium, a microscopic parasite that affects the intestines.
🦠 What is Cryptosporidium?
An intestinal parasite that causes gastrointestinal symptoms like diarrhea and can be especially tough on the very young or immunocompromised. It’s also notoriously tricky to treat and manage in a rescue setting.
For healthy cats, their immune system will usually fight off the parasite on its own, and the condition will generally run its course without the need for treatment. However, young, elderly, or immune-compromised animals may need meds and more guarded care to avoid internal complications. We will be starting medication to help the symptomatic kittens get through this as comfortably and safely as possible.
🐾 What This Means for Future Adopters:
To ensure transparency and support, we’re updating our adoption contract for any kittens currently in the rescue who’ve been exposed. The new clause will state:
“If your adopted kitten begins showing clinical signs related to cryptosporidium (such as chronic diarrhea, weight loss, or persistent GI upset), or tests positive within 14 days of adoption, Sweetwhisker Rescue may be able to assist with medical expenses related to diagnosis or treatment.”
We will NOT list any cat that is symptomatic for adoption. Our goal is simply to offer a little help if anything arises shortly after adoption, while also setting clear and realistic expectations.
❤️ Thank you for sticking with us through the messier parts of rescue life. We’re grateful for your support and understanding as we continue to prioritize the health of our kittens—and the families who love them
