Update on Colonel sorry for the wait. There were about five days. I don’t think I got a single solid night of sleep between him the kittens the hoard cats and the rescue. So when we got everyone back, fed and settled, it was time for me to collapse.
Colonel was released with a clean bill of health. They decided not to continue any medication’s as the area is not infected just extremely agitated. In the original procedure They had to use re**al tissue to repair the outside damage to Colonels tissues that were open and leading to the missing parts of his a**s and multiple parts of his sphincter, including tissues/muscle mass. Due to that, the reconstructed area will always have skin that would normally create mucus on the inside of his body now on the outside, which is why it can resemble another bu****le. It doesn’t appear completely closed, but it is and the skin is bright pink due to the type of skin that was grafted in the area.
This means Colonel is having a hard time passing bowel movements on his own, meaning it could start coming out on its own which is why he can be so messy in a crate versus a home environment because sometimes he can’t make it to the litter box before it falls out 💩. This also means that the a**l gland Colonel does have left cannot express itself naturally like it normally would.
Things that can be done to help Colonel and his skin graph adjust back to normal is he now requires having a**l gland, expression everyone to two months as well as a sanitary groom. And to keep the new skin graft, well moisturized with lubricant.
This means Colonel is still ready for adoption. The only special Care he requires is what’s listed above. He is very good about making it to the litter box, but there are a few times a week. I have to pick up stray turds so potential adopters may want to take that into account giving or creating Colonel a space of his own where he can be around everyone and still keep his stray poops in one area. ❤️🩹🐾🐈⬛🌸🩷
What did they do at the vet? They sedated Colonel so the sensitive area could be fully and thoroughly examined. They cleaned up the area with a sanitary cut again. They expressed an emptied his a**l gland, which was about the size of a golf ball which is the reason they believe the area became so agitated after he seemed to be doing so well.
Is he a candidate for another reconstructive surgery to possibly make things more comfortable? No.
What was done was all they could do there is no other tissue that can be used to repair that area or anywhere to attach a new skin graft too at that matter BECAUSE OF the loss of tissue and muscle in the area. Whatever got Colonel got him really good. He is lucky I was able to show up the day that I did and find him laying in the yard. It was beginning to close up on its own infected with pieces of his a**s missing . 😢
Colonel was doing good recovering from surgery while adjusting to the new area before it became agitated. I believe he will go back to doing great once we continue his new routine and seek a forever home where he can be free of his crate 100 percent of the time.
Thank you to everyone who invested time, money, energy, and love into colonel over the last year. There have been ups and downs, where I wasn’t sure if he would be OK or not. But I’m happy and comfortable knowing that we have reached a point that we’ve done all we can do with what we had ,rescue and vet included. Knowing it will be good enough with small routine. We did it. We saved his life. We helped his body survive a tragedy. His body just works different now, but He will be okay, he is not in extreme pain or discomfort as there is no more infection and we know now how to prevent and look out for another.
As always!!!
Love,
