July 4th is almost here, and while it can be a fun thing to watch, many equestrians and farm owners out there are already dreading the fireworks that are going to frighten their animals in the night.
Here are some tips to keep your equine friends safe during these booming festivities:
💥BE AWARE: Find out when scheduled firework shows are in your area and communicate with your neighbors. Maybe kindly ask them to give you some notice if they are planning to use fireworks this week.
💥STAY SAFE: Keep your horses stalled or sheltered to avoid spooking and runaways. If you can't stall, atleast check your pasture area for anything they could injure themselves on if they were to spook and bolt. (like large rocks, holes, and downed branches)
💥KEEP CALM: Turning up the barn radio and fans can muffle the sound of the fireworks. Leaving the lights on help lessen the effect of the bright flashes. Give them fresh hay or something to keep them occupied.
💊If you still have concerns that your horse may be stressed, consult with your veterinarian about possibly using a calming agent or sedative.
💥Last but not least BE KIND! Let everyone enjoy the festivities but please be courteousif you are planning on setting fireworks off as they can be upsetting for military veterans, pets, elders, and farm animals around you!💥
Happy 4th of July from Hepler Horse Training! We hope everyone has a fun, safe weekend! Don’t forget the reasons we’re able to celebrate! 🇺🇸
