šŸ’  Sliding Blu Sapphire šŸ’

This flashy filly is a coming 3yr old AQHA registered buckskin roan standing 15hh. If you can sit on a horse then you can ride her. She’s tracked the flag, pulls the log, easy to saddle, stands tied, leads, loads, picks up her feet, sound and no spook. She is as good minded as they can possibly come!
Waiting on UC Davis to get back with her panel testing (any day now) color testing is attached below in the pictures. UTD on teeth floating, vacc, deworming and the farrier.

šŸ‘€ Foaling Season: What to Look for in Newborn Foals

Foaling season is one of the most exciting times for horse owners. Watching a new life take its first breath is a powerful experience, but it's also a critical time to ensure the health and safety of both the mare and foal. Here’s what you should know about key milestones, potential dangers, and how to set your foal up for a healthy future.

āž”ļø Milestones for Newborn Foals

A healthy foal should meet specific milestones within the first few hours of life:

1. Standing: Foals should attempt to stand within 30 minutes to 1 hour and should be standing successfully within 1 to 2 hours after birth.

2. Nursing: Foals should begin nursing within 2 to 3 hours. Nursing is critical for the intake of colostrum, which provides essential antibodies.

3. Passing Meconium: Meconium, the first dark, sticky stool, should pass within 12 hours. Retained meconium can lead to colic and requires veterinary intervention.

4. Bonding: Watch for signs of bonding between the mare and foal. The mare should lick and nuzzle her foal, encouraging it to stand and nurse.

āž”ļø Failure of Passive Transfer (FPT)

Colostrum is the foal’s only source of antibodies during its first days of life, as their immune system is not yet fully developed. Failure of passive transfer (FPT) occurs if the foal does not receive enough colostrum. This can happen if:
- The foal fails to nurse properly.
- The mare does not produce adequate colostrum.
- The foal's intestines are unable to absorb the antibodies.

Foals must consume colostrum within the first 12 to 18 hours while their gut can still absorb antibodies. A veterinarian can perform an IgG test to determine if the foal has received adequate immunity. If levels are low, plasma transfusions may be required.

āž”ļø The Placenta: A Vital Indicator of Health

The placenta should pass within 3 hours after birth. Retained placentas can lead to infections, endotoxemia, or laminitis in the mare. Examine the placenta to ensure it is intact and free of abnormalities. Contact your veterinarian immediately if the placenta is retained or appears unhealthy.

āž”ļø Neonatal Isoerythrolysis (NI)

Neonatal isoerythrolysis (NI) is a life-threatening condition where a mare’s antibodies attack the foal’s red blood cells. This occurs if the mare has antibodies against the foal’s blood type, which the foal ingests through colostrum. Signs of NI include lethargy, pale or yellow mucous membranes, and rapid breathing. Breeders should test the mare’s blood for compatibility with the stallion before breeding to reduce this risk.

āž”ļø Monitoring and Early Intervention

Foals are fragile, and early intervention can save lives. Watch for the following warning signs:

- Lack of coordination or inability to stand or nurse.
- Persistent lethargy or weakness.
- Signs of pain, such as colic or restlessness.
- Swollen joints or fever, which can indicate infection.

āž”ļø Veterinary Checkups

Schedule a veterinary exam within the first 24 hours to assess the foal’s health, evaluate colostrum intake, and ensure the mare’s post-foaling recovery. Early detection of issues can make all the difference.

šŸ«¶šŸ» Foaling season requires careful observation and preparedness. Knowing what to expect and understanding potential risks like FPT, retained placenta, and NI can help you provide the best start for your foal. Keep a close eye on milestones, and don’t hesitate to involve your veterinarian if something seems off. A newborn’s health spirals quickly. Better to be safe than sorry.

**As always speak with your veterinarian for advice and care**
