Horseshoeing is dangerous. Your work can literally choose to not work or like you. You work with an animal's primary defense weapons while they are still in control of them and in a position where they can immediately be put to use. A farrier doesn't choose this life because they like being bent over for hours a day with eminent risk to their safety at their finger tips in debilitating heat. It is a passion driven by the love of what they work with. We accept the risk because the horse needs us.

Today was one of those days that make you feel good. Three horses done today and all of them with these kinds of results. Thank God for the wind.

Some days never go as planned,. In fact, I hurt myself more than the horses do. I cut the side of my thumb opening a new box of Liberty copper nails with my hoof knife. Rinsed with water, wrapped it up with vet wrap, and finished the shoes.

We had a good day. A horse with a history of being nervous and difficult (same reasons) was a model horse; giving me her feet when asked and showing patience. The other had an abscess crack that was almost grown out, but now it's gone. It's these kinds of result that make this worth it, along with seeing them feel better or just move better.

Sometimes good farrier work is only part of the solution. Good feeding regimen and suppliants help too. This foot has been a long time into recovery. It was cut into the coronary band causing issues with the strength of the new growth. With the right diet and supplements we are almost to the best foot he has had since the accident 6 years ago.

Got to help another rescue today. Feet had been neglected for a while. It's going to take a bit to get the feet back to rights but we made a good start today.

Since becoming a farrier this was the first time I have worked in sub-twenty degree weather.

Makes for a very cold day, but to help an animal in pain, it was worth it.

First time shoeing a stud. I wasn't really worried he'd be difficult as I was the one who started trimming his feet, but you never know how they'll take it. He took it very well. I must admit that someone else had already started the shoes before me. This was fun.
