I saw a FB post recently declaring the trim doesn’t matter if you have a talented shoer shoeing your horse.

I’ve also chatted with several people over the last week about how the hoofcare industry is entirely unregulated in the U.S. There is 0 requirement for education, certification, experience, or ***continued education*** to identify yourself as a Farrier/Hoofcare Provider.

Finding a provider that continues their education and holds philosophies that align with your goals for your horse is so important. Trimming affects the whole horse and should be done so with a whole horse approach.

The trim always matters.

We’re still working to heal the central sulcus infection, but just look at the transformation in less than 10 weeks out of steel shoes 😍

Toe and heels have come back, digital cushion is re-engaging, and we’re already seeing a more natural round shape.

Laminitis is already hitting hard this year. I spoke with multiple owners last week who hadn’t started using their grazing muzzle yet because “the grass wasn’t really growing yet”…..are we all looking at the same grass??

The grass is HERE! The time to muzzle is NOW!!
My springtime muzzle rule of thumb is always March 1st through Memorial Day.
Check your horses hoof temperature every day and familiarize yourself with what their normal is.
Are they moving a little slower than normal today? Hesitating to cross the gravel driveway when they don’t normally? Hoof boots don’t fit because of sudden rapid growth?
Don’t wait until they’re full blown laminitic to take action. Being proactive with an ounce of prevention can save your horse!

Just a satisfying thoroughbred trim 🐎
Swipe to see how much his digital cushion has strengthened after 1.5 years of barefoot trimming vs. traditional flat trims. Those heel bulbs 😍

Does your horse have reluctance to move forward? not tracking up? trouble with lead changes? trouble with piaffes? Have you considered taking hoof radiographs and checking for negative palmar or plantar angles?

A couple years ago this seemed like a hot “disease du jour” topic, but I feel like it’s lost some attention lately in the horse world when it’s still a clear pathology many horses suffer with! Caudal heel failure is still a very common pathology affecting the whole horse.

Can it be corrected? Yes.
Does it always require an aggressive shoeing package for the rest of the horse’s life? No.
We were able to get this mare’s angles back to a much better place barefoot with the help of thanks to collaborations between providers and an awesome owner!

Ask questions, gather data, and work with your hoof care provider AND veterinarian to find solutions!

When I met this guy 2.5 years ago he was very lame and I could *hear* the abscess before I saw it (iykyk 😣)

He had started to slough his entire frog and injured the corium underneath the apex.

We immediately put him on a 4 week trim cycle and his owner religiously started a cleaning and treatment regimen.

After 3 months of healing he was sound again without boots and has been sound and abscess free ever since! It’s crazy to see the deformity of the tip of his frog where he injured the corium.
