No woodcock today. I have the feeling the birds have moved on for the season. What a season it has been so far. Today I reflected on the birds, the covers and the dogs. Huck has had his best season. He is hunting hard and smart. In our favorite cover he seems to run directly from one bird to the next. He just knows. I love this dog. He will be 6 years old later this month. I can only hope the best is yet to come.

A quick but productive trip this morning. Brook is in her prime. Never blew the whistle. Never gave a command. Never used the e-collar. Just listened to the bell and watched this girl handle the cover and birds to perfection.

Another exceptional day in the field with Huck. With social media, it’s easy to get caught up in limits and flush counts. I am trying to focus more on the moments. Sitting with Huck to take a break near an old beaver pond may have been the best moment of the day. Huck just loves to be with me wherever we are. Luckily today we were doing his favorite thing! Chasing woodcock!

I don’t typically hunt Woodcock in the evening…perhaps I should! Huck and I had a hunt to remember today. This is a tough cover with thick golden rod and Autumn Olive. The birds are difficult because they typically flush out the other side of the Autumn Olive with no clear shot. I was content to leave with two birds. I stopped on a log for a photo - Huck then pointed four more birds and we ended with our limit. Huck worked so hard. I have so much respect for these little birds and these dogs bred to pursue them.

Another great trip up North. The last two years have been our best since 2006. We didn’t get into any Woodcock flights but still a great trip. Brook is in her prime. She is the best grouse dog I have owned. She deserved better as we missed many shots over her points. Remi is a bird finder and is figuring it out. She is the snappiest retriever of the bunch. Breezy gets better and better every time she is on the ground. She gets spoiled more than any bird dog I have ever owned! Last picture is sunset at our cabin over the Little Manistee.

Four seasons riverfront cabin rentals with fly fishing and paddlesport on the Little Manistee River, surrounded by miles of trails for the hiker, mountain biker, ATV/ORV rider.

Michigan was good to us again this year! Add another story to Brook’s grouse hunting tales as she tracked and retrieved a winged grouse 100+ yards out of a swamp! I thought we had 0% chance of getting that bird!
AJ with his first grouse and the two young ladies, Remi and Breezy, both made huge improvements over last season.

I finished this Black Duck up this week. It turned out great. On to the next one to keep learning!

Amazing opportunity to learn Taxidermy from one of the best! Getting Breezy out on some Woodcock was a bonus! Pictures of my first mounted birds coming soon!

Had a nice couple days running dogs and doing a little taxidermy with this Ohioan!
