Since temperatures in the Hampton Roads this week will be around 100 degrees, we want to remind everyone to take measures to prevent heat stroke in your pets! Please share this post to spread the word!
- All dogs can be affected but the aged, obese, very furry, sick, and brachycephalic (pugs, bulldogs, boxers, etc) are most susceptible.
- Always ensure that dogs have unrestricted access to water and shade - please DO NOT tether as tethers can become entangled restricting the dogs access to water and/or shade.
- Ensure that water bowls cannot be flipped or spilled.
- Exercise dogs during the cool parts of the day (early morning/nighttime) and avoid exercise during the hottest times.
- Avoid forced exercise (walking/running/playing fetch) anytime the temperature is over 80 degrees F.
- DO NOT leave any pet unattended in a parked car.
- Signs of heat stroke include panting, thick or sticky saliva, depression, weakness, dizziness, vomiting, and coma.
- If you suspect your pet may have heat stroke, remove them from the hot environment and bring them to your CLOSEST veterinary hospital as soon as possible!
