Good afternoon Fairy Tails Grooming Family! We love each and every dog that comes through our doors, and want to share both fun facts and practical tips for breeds that we see on a regular basis. Welcome to Breed Feature Thursday!
This week, we’re featuring a group of breeds known as the doodles. A doodle is any cross between a poodle and another breed (Golden Retriever, Labrador, etc).
Fun facts:
-Monica Dickens, granddaughter of Charles Dickens bred Golden Doodles in the 1960s to create hypoallergenic service dogs
-The first popular poodle cross is the Pudelpointer, an 1800s cross between the German Pudel and English Pointers.
- The first Labradoodle was bred by Wally Conron, a breeding manager for the Royal Guide Dog Association of Australia.
Grooming considerations:
Because they’re low-shedding, doodles required more maintenance than their high-shedding counterparts. Without shedding, their hair can get incredibly long (and tangled!). With this in mind:
- Brush your doodle with a slicker brush daily, or at least as often as you can.
- If you choose to give your doodle a bath at home, be sure to rinse out the shampoo really well. Also, keep in mind that wet hair tangles/matts much easier than dry hair. If your doodle is already matted, do not bath them at home. This will make the problem worse.
- Doodle coats can vary! Because they are a cross, doodles may vary greatly regarding their grooming needs. If you have any dog-specific questions, please ask our groomers next time we see your baby! We’re more than happy to provide maintenance advice for in-between haircuts to keep them looking their best.
We’d love to see pictures of your doodles below! What breed would you like to see covered next?
