DAY 5 — OBEDIENCE DOESN'T EQUAL SERVICE DOG TRAINING

A dog that can sit, stay, heel, and come when called is a well-trained dog.

But obedience alone doesn't make a service dog.

A service dog must also be trained to perform work or tasks that assist its handler with their disability.

Think of obedience as part of the foundation.

Task training is where that foundation becomes a tool for independence.

A dog can have amazing obedience and still not be suited for service work.

And a service dog can have disability-related tasks that you may never even realize are happening.

What is one thing you wish someone had told you before starting your service dog journey? For me it would be having anything and everything you can for desensitization before bringing pup home so there are no delays🙃

Maybe it was something about training, public access, finding the right prospect, handling setbacks, dealing with the public, or even the emotional side of watching your partner grow older and eventually retire.

DAY 4 — SERVICE DOGS AREN'T BORN TRAINED

A puppy doesn't automatically know how to be a service dog.

They have to learn.

And then they have to practice.

And practice again.

And again.

Service dog training can involve obedience, socialization, environmental exposure, neutrality, task training, public access skills, impulse control, recovery from distractions, and much more.

What you see when a service dog calmly walks through a store is the result of countless hours of work that you probably didn't see.

The finished dog may make it look easy.

That's the point.

DAY 3 — SERVICE DOG, ESA, OR PET?

These terms are often used interchangeably, but they aren't the same thing.

A service dog is individually trained to perform work or tasks related to a person's disability.

An emotional support animal provides comfort or emotional support through its presence, but isn't considered a service animal simply because it provides emotional comfort.

A pet is a companion animal without disability-related work or task training.

None of these makes an animal "better" than another.

They simply have different roles, different protections, and different responsibilities.

Understanding the difference helps everyone.

Tomorrow we're talking about something people often underestimate: just how much training goes into a service dog.

Sometimes plans have to change, and that’s okay.

The plan was to get some professional photos done with King to celebrate his birthday and capture some special memories of my heart dog doing what he loves.

Unfortunately, the reality of living with disabilities means that sometimes even the plans we’re most excited about just don’t happen the way we imagined. Episode flares changed our plans, and right now, getting out of the house safely has to come first.

But that doesn’t mean the photos aren’t happening. Once I’m able to get out safely, King and I will be doing his birthday photoshoot — and I think it will make those pictures even more special.

Sometimes we have to slow down, reschedule, and give our bodies the time they need. It can be disappointing, but there’s nothing wrong with that.

King’s birthday celebration may be a little delayed, but we’ll get there. And when we do, we’ll make it count.

DAY 2 — WHAT EXACTLY IS A SERVICE DOG?

A service dog is much more than a well-behaved dog wearing a vest.

Under the ADA, a service animal is generally a dog that has been individually trained to do work or perform tasks for a person with a disability.

That means there is a reason behind the training.

A service dog may alert, retrieve, guide, interrupt behaviors, provide mobility assistance, assist during medical episodes, or perform other disability-related tasks.

But here's something important:

A service dog doesn't have to look a certain way, wear a certain type of gear, or perform the same tasks as another service dog.

Every team is different because every handler's needs are different.
