Helping someone overcome their fears around horses, is one of the most rewarding feelings for us here, and Kurtz Corral is the perfect stable for any first time riders! Yesterday Charlotte arrived excited for her first ride, but when it came time to get on, the nerves hit hard. She grew quiet, hesitant, and even tearful. And truthfully anyone who gets on a horse is a brave person!! These are big, powerful animals, and no matter how well trained they are, they all have a mind of their own. That’s why nearly 65 years of experience here matters so much! It’s built a herd of reliable, happy, calm, and safe horses that make first time rides something to truly enjoy.

Three quick tips for new riders:
Take a deep breath—your horse will feel your calm.
Keep your body loose—tension makes balance harder.
Look where you want to go—your body (and your horse) will follow

Charlotte was paired with Moon. His patience and steady nature worked their magic. She started cautious, but by the end she was laughing, giving him scratches, and saying she’d fallen in love with him.

Meet Star ⭐️ a.k.a. Squirrel

We’ve had a very exciting couple of weeks here at Kurtz Corral, blessed to welcome four beautiful new horses into our herd! Star is a 16 year-old mare, likely part Saddlebred, who came to us this past Friday with two other horses: Reba, and a mare currently nicknamed Cinnamon.

Star earned the nickname “Squirrel” not because she’s jumpy in a bad way, but she’s always on the lookout for what’s going on around her. She’s curious, alert, and holds her head high like a giraffe, taking in every little detail. It’s part of what makes her such a natural leader already stepping up as one in the smaller groups she’s been introduced to.

We haven’t taken her out on the trail yet, but we rode her in the arena today and she was calm, confident, and steady. If all goes well, she’ll be heading out on her very first trail ride later this week.

Meet Sapphire AKA Sassy Saf💙 Our newest addition is a 19-year-old, blue roan, Tennessee Walker who just arrived yesterday. After spending the last few years in the company of cows, she’s eager to meet the horse herd. Here she is saying hello to Lincoln through the fence—first of many new friendships to come😝

🌈 In Loving Memory of Sugar 🐴

This morning, we said goodbye to our sweet Sugar, who passed peacefully out in the pasture..likely sometime in the quiet of the night, under the stars, surrounded by the herd she’s known for over 10 years.

Sugar was one of those rare souls whos heart strings pulled towards humans rather than her herd. She but she loved people and loved to ride. She was the first to the gate every morning, always ready to go, light on her feet and full of heart. We often joked she was our very own Jane Fonda, petite, fit, and always up for an adventure.

She now runs free across the rainbow bridge, joining Buddy, Trigger, Bailey, Izzy, and so many other unforgettable horses who’ve left hoofprints on all our hearts.

If you’ve ever had the chance to ride Sugar or any of our beloved horses from years past we’d love if you shared a favorite photo or memory in the comments. Let’s celebrate the joy, connection, and countless trail miles they gave us all.

We’ll miss you dearly, Sugar. Thank you for every ride, every trail, every quiet morning.
