Sharing some great Old Sturbridge Village history.

On this day in 1946, Old Sturbridge Village opened to the public for the first time! 🎉 Our story, however, began years before. In the mid-1920s, our founder, A.B. Wells, began collecting “primitive” antiques that showed how ordinary people lived a century before. He became enraptured with collecting these tools, everyday furnishings, and gadgets, and his collection grew rapidly. In the 1930s, George B. Wells proposed a "live Village" to display that growing collection, and landscaping to create the "Village Green" began soon after. In 1937, the Gebhardt Barn became the first building to be moved to Village grounds. Over the next few years, the Fitch House, Shoe Shop, Richardson House, and the Miner Grant Store were moved. Work was halted from 1943 to 1945 due to World War II, but the Village officially opened to the public soon after in 1946. One of the most iconic Village buildings, the Center Meetinghouse, was moved to the Village the following year.

Pictured here is a small portion of Wells' massive collection of antiques.

Second Chance Animal Services is teeing up for its 13th Annual Charity Golf Tournament, returning Monday, July 14th to the stunning Cold Spring Country Club in Belchertown. This much-anticipated event combines a great day of golf with the powerful mission of helping pets receive the veterinary care they need.

Proceeds from the tournament will benefit Second Chance’s Community Veterinary Hospitals in Springfield, Worcester, Southbridge, and North Brookfield—lifesaving programs that provide affordable care to pets in underserved communities and help keep them with the families who love them.

“This is a fantastic day of golf for an even greater cause,” said Lindsay Doray, Chief Development Officer at Second Chance. “In today’s climate, access to veterinary care is more important than ever. Our hospitals help bridge the gap for families who might otherwise be forced to surrender a beloved pet. By joining us on the green, golfers are directly supporting efforts to reduce pet homelessness and suffering.”

Golfers will enjoy a full day of fun, including a box lunch, banquet dinner, a commemorative gift, and a bucket of range balls. The tournament will feature on-course tastings and exciting contests such as longest drive, closest to the pin, closest to the line, a yellow ball competition, and more. A hole-in-one challenge offers a $4,000 pool or spa prize sponsored by Teddy Bear Pools. Guests can also take part in raffles and a silent auction, which opens online one week prior to the event.

Second Chance invites local businesses to be part of this impactful event through sponsorship opportunities or by donating items for the silent auction and raffle. More information is available at www.secondchanceanimals.org/events/golf.

Hitchcock Academy will host Brimfield’s annual Town-Wide Tag Sale on Saturday, June 7, 2025 from 8am to 2pm with some sales also running Sunday. The antiques mecca is a great place to hunt for oddities and treasures that may have been claimed over the years at the town’s thrice annual flea market, or items otherwise accumulated for your perusing pleasure.

Over 50 sites are anticipated to participate.

Maps are sold at Hitchcock for $2 each. They include a full list of participating addresses, and detailed listings of what will be sold at each as well as a physical map marked with sale locations to help you plan your route. The map will also indicate which sales will run on Sunday.

Bargain hunters are encouraged to kick off their day with the vendors set up on Hitchcock’s lawn as they purchase their map. The Brimfield Farmers’ Market will also be running from 9am to 1pm in the Hitchcock parking lot offering local staples such as eggs, veggies, and beef as well as some grab-and-go options for tag sale refueling such as baked goods, kombucha, and homemade ice cream.

From there, head to the sales all over town, promising antiques and vintage items, designer clothing, outdoor furniture, books, household items, kids games and toys, baby goods, antique and refinished furniture, Americana, knick-knacks, bicycle accessories, farm equipment, a canoe, car parts, dog gear, vinyl records, cameras, Christmas items, and so much more – even an estate sale nestled among them.

For more information, visit www.hitchcockacademy.org. Hitchcock Academy is a community center located at 2 Brookfield Road in Brimfield serving the community with educational,
recreational, and cultural programming.
