This is cool and interesting. The “silver lining” in an oilfish eye socket refers to a reflective, mirror-like layer at the back of the eye called the tapetum lucidum. This silvery, metallic-looking lining functions as a natural reflector. It bounces light that passes through the retina back through the photoreceptors a second time, significantly enhancing the fish’s vision in the dim, dark depths of the ocean where they hunt.
