Welcome Frankie Beans to CAL 🫘
He’s joining us for Day Training starting Monday.
He’s a wire-haired Dachshund with a heart bigger than his legs. Current hobbies include sunbathing, & serious couch snuggles.
We’re excited to have him.
Day Training is where dogs come to learn, play, and nap hard. Frankie’s here to work on his confidence, practice being the best version of himself, and probably steal a few hearts along the way.

Happy National Dog Day from the CAL crew.🐾🐶

Everyone, meet Loose. ✨🐾
Session 1 starts today.
He already knows “sit” and “stay.”So we didn’t do those today.
First we set marks.
Mark = the sound that means “YES, that’s exactly right. Reward is coming.”
For Loose, that’s yes. Yes = treat. Every time.
Why start here if he knows sit?
Because most dogs “know” sit in the kitchen. They don’t know it at the park, door, or when the squirrel runs by.
Marks are how we get from “kitchen sit” to “real-world sit.”
A yes tells him exactly what moment earned the reward. No confusion. No frustration. Just clarity.
Today Loose learned: That yes sound = I did it right.
We don’t skip foundations, even for dogs who “know stuff.”
Because reliable dogs aren’t built on commands they kinda know. They’re built on crystal-clear communication.
That’s how we turn “he sits at home” into “he sits anywhere.”

Session 9 with Brodie = we got precise.
Today was two-fold:
Hand Touches → Building focus + engagement.
His job: Boop my palm, get paid. Simple, but it’s the foundation of heeling, recall, and getting attention around distractions. No leash pop needed when your hand = magnet.🧲
Scent Discrimination
Not just “find the smell.” Find THIS smell vs that smell.
His brain was TIRED after 15 mins. In the best way.
Why this matters for dogs:
Hand touch = emergency U-turn on walks
Scent work = 10 mins of brain drain = calmer nights at home
We don’t just train “sit.” We train focus. We train thinking. We train partnership.
That’s Session 9 of Private Training. It’s not basic. It’s better.

Recall isn’t a suggestion. It’s a skill.✨
One word. Two dogs. Zero hesitation.
This is what we train for at CAL:

Foundation Day for Gracie: Sit, Down, Recall

Session 4 wasn’t about perfect reps. It was about laying the first brick.

Why we introduced all 3 today together:
Sit = The start of impulse control. We need it before doors, meals, and leashing up.
Down = The start of an off-switch. We need it for calm in the house.
Recall = The start of freedom. We need it for safety, always.

Are they reliable yet? No. It’s Day 1.

She popped up out of down. She needed a second cue for sit. She recalled on a long line with no distractions.

And that’s exactly right for Session 4.

You can’t proof a command that doesn’t exist. Today, they exist.

Next 2 weeks = reps at home. Then we add distance, duration, and real-world distractions.

This is how reliable dogs are built. One foundation day at a time.

This handsome boy is a 9-month-old Catahoula Leopard / Pit mix who just joined the Canine Adventure family for Private Training.
Loose has all the brains and drive of a Catahoula with the muscle and heart of a Pit. Right now that = a lot of energy and drive 😅
We’re handling training right in their home and neighborhood, so every win translates to real life.

How the military shaped the way I train dogs 🎖️

Before CAL, I was learning about consistency and firm boundaries in uniform.

What stuck with me wasn’t the yelling.
It was this: Clarity + consistency = trust.

Dogs aren’t that different.

Here’s what I carried into dog training:

Basics win wars. Fancy doesn’t matter if “sit” and “come” don’t work.
Bond is everything. No engagement, no training. Period.
One new thing per session. Overwhelmed dogs don’t learn. They shut down.
Make it fun. We get better results when the dog actually wants to work.

I’m not here to break your dog’s spirit.
