🐶Let’s Talk About Potty Training a Puppy🐾
Potty training isn’t about luck- it’s about routine, structure, and management. If accidents are happening, they’re almost always due to a setup or supervision issue, not a “stubborn” puppy.
Here are a few key points to set your pup (and your sanity) up for success:
🕒 Routine Meals = Predictable Potty Times
Skip the free feeding. Feeding at scheduled times means you’ll have a better idea when your pup needs to go. Most puppies need to go potty:
• Right after eating
• After waking up
• After playing
• Every 1–2 hours when young
🚫💧Water Has Rules Too
Free access to water is important during the day, especially after play, but in the evening?
Pick it up 1–2 hours before bedtime to help prevent overnight accidents.
📏 Crate Size Matters
Your crate should be just big enough for your puppy to stand, turn, and lie down- not run laps.
A crate that’s too big invites pottying in one corner and sleeping in another. (Yes, we’ve been there too. Learn from our mistakes!)
👀 Supervision is Non-Negotiable
If your puppy is roaming the house unsupervised, accidents will happen and you’ll miss the chance to teach them what to do instead.
Use a leash tether or let them drag a leash indoors so you can interrupt and redirect. Watch for signs like sniffing, circling, or suddenly wandering away.
📓 Accidents Happen! Take Notes!
If your puppy has an accident, don’t scold—analyze. Were you too late? Did they drink water after play and not go out? Use every mistake as a learning moment for you, not a punishment for them.
🎯 Potty training success isn’t about being perfect- it’s about being consistent, proactive, and patient.
You’ve got this (and so does your puppy)!
