I guess it's time to introduce a pup that will have his forever home with us ❤️ His name is Hamster and he is an interesting little man. So, story time!
On September 21st, our mama, Possum, went into labor. Everything seemed normal until the birth of the third pup. I was assisting with cleaning the pup up and realized, "Where is the tail?" The pup I was cleaning had no tail! That's the prettiest part of a Pomsky! I looked again and the pup had a tail, but it appeared to have grown into the back end of the pup and only the very end was outside. Nothing else seemed off and Possum was pushing again, so I chalked it up to some weird oddity and focused on the next baby.
The last pup was not breathing, so I rubbed the baby briskly until it took a breath. At this point it was only gasping. I cleaned the gunk out of his mouth, throat and nose, but his breathing wasn't getting better. That's when I noticed that this baby truly had no tail either! Not a stump, just nothing :( At that point, I placed him with his mom and decided to let nature take its course.
Imagine my surprise when I checked in the morning and this pup was not only breathing fine, but was eating like a champ! I don't know what his mom did, but she kept doing it and he continued to grow, just not like his siblings. As time went on, we noticed that one of his back legs was really short, his body was shorter than the others and he wasn't shaped quite right. Finally, at 2 weeks old, we took both of the boys with issues to the vet. The first boy does have a crook in his spine and he has a cork screw tail but he should be OK. He is growing well and is keeping up with his siblings. The prognosis for Hamster isn't as good. I have posted his x- ray here. He has a crooked spine, his rib cage is misshapen, neither back leg is really attached to his body (he does use his left leg a little bit, but the shorter right leg is pretty much useless) and his a**s is located high on his back end. The vet was extremely guarded in her prognosis and what his future would look like.
This week, I went down to our "dog house" (a converted tiny shed type house) and he was laying on his side, extremely weak. The decision was made at that point to bring him into the house due to his mama was no longer wanting to nurse the pups. They are 6 weeks old and she is over it. Hamster still needs formula and had gotten extremely dehydrated. I wasn't sure he was going to make it and at one point that day felt maybe we should put him out of his misery
Well, he surprised us all! He has regained his strength and has a definite will to live! He loves to play and his favorite toy right now is Rocks goatee. He sleeps in our incubator and eats hard food and formula. He is so fun! We are currently on a road trip to deliver a puppy to it's new home and I'm so very glad we didn't give up on him! We will be getting both our stud and dam tested further to find out how this happened.
