This just in from the Groundhog Weather Network:

Tipsy is pleased to report, despite not being pleased to be woken from her nap, that from her observation location near Butt Crack Rock she did not see her shadow. Spring is on the way! The ornery girl was quoted saying, “Screw the cold weather, I’m not a polar bear!”

I decided to get a quick picture of Tipsy with Santa after we packed up at the end of the Stoutsville Christmas Bazaar today. She was looking the wrong way so I held her up. I think the picture says it all! Best Santa picture ever! 😂 At least she only got one shoe. 🤷🏻‍♀️

This year our Christmas ornament artist is the beautiful Tipsy. We have 50 paw painted Christmas ornaments we will be selling at the Stoutsville Christmas Parade and Craft Bazaar this Saturday, December 14th, at the fire station from 11-5. Ornaments are $10 and each have a tag telling about the artist. 100% of the profits will go towards converting our old duck enclosure into a fox enclosure to enable us to start accepting fox. If you are unable to visit Tipsy this Saturday send a message if interested in an ornament. We also have 15 left from last year painted by Radar, our opossum.

If you choose to participate in Giving Tuesday we would be grateful for considering Mutt Farm Wildlife Rehabilitation to place your donation.

Ohio Wildlife Rahabilitators are volunteers for the Ohio Division of Wildlife. We are responsible for the cost of classes to renew our license, shots, and all medical and dietary supplies. We are operating 90% on my teaching salary which is not sustainable for the future. We are the only licensed wildlife center for the entire southeast quarter of Ohio. This year we received calls for over 1500 wild animals orphaned and/or injured. We accepted as many as possible and directed care for the others while working full time jobs. The average cost to save 1 baby squirrel is $250, and increases with the size of the liter and the size of the animal.

We are truly grateful for any donations to help us continue to save Ohio’s precious wild animals! 100% of donations go straight to medicine, food, formula, and housing.

There are a few more days to vote for Wild Bill in the Fairfield County Trail of Scarecrows. We would appreciate more votes! We are out to win the Stoutsville category again to keep our title and bragging rights; and the prize money goes towards supplies for the animals in care.

This year the animals have teamed up to cage Wild Bill.

If you have a raccoon in or around your house, it’s best to assume there are babies too! We typically receive baby raccoons when there’s a situation with a "nuisance" mama raccoon in someone's house. The homeowner will relocate mom then days later the babies are discovered. The baby raccoons have been flowing in this week, so let’s help keep them with their mom this season by trying humane hazing techniques before you contact a pest control service.

Raccoons like dark, quiet locations to raise their young, so make your attic/ crawl space the opposite! You want to do this around dusk since raccoons are nocturnal.

💡🔦 Light it up! Spotlights, flashlights, strobe lights, work lights, use whatever you have! Set them up by the entrance/exit point or throughout your attic to ensure maximum annoyance.

🎙📣 Crank it up! Place a speaker or radio in or near the attic and turn it on as loud as you (and your neighbors) can tolerate. Rock music, talk radio, anything loud or with human voices will work.

If the mom is successfully annoyed, she will carry her babies one by one to a new location. It will probably take a full night or two, but she should come back for them all.

- If you're sure they have completely vacated, put up some hardware cloth or chicken wire to cover the entrance/exit hole until you can arrange a more permanent fix.

- If you're unsure if they've left, stuff some newspaper into the entrance/exit hole. Alternatively, tape one or two layers of paper covering it. If a few nights go by and it's undisturbed, then congrats! Your attic is now raccoon free and mom and babies can keep on living their best life!

📜✅ (If you do resort to a pest control service, ask them to double check for babies so they can at least be relocated together. Also ask to see the company’s state permit before you sign a contract to be sure they will actually be relocating the raccoons.)

🎈 🥳 BIG NEWS TODAY! 🥳 🎈
We are so excited for the completion of our skunk and raccoon pre-release cage! This new enclosure has been a year and a half in the making.

A huge thank you to Matthew for his hard work and time building us a second enclosure for our rescue animals!

❤️ We would like to thank: ❤️
Atomic Credit Union,
Grandma Fayes Grocery and Deli,
Pam and Laura,
And our wonderful monthly My Giving Circle donators Kim, Melinda, Lori, and Amy.
Your donations made this wonderful new space possible!

Stink, Stank, Stunk, and Bomb enjoyed their first meal in the large new space, and then explored every nook and cranny. This evening we added a tire swing and a house.

This enclosure will enable us to help more animals each year!

Next we would like to convert our old duck pen into a fox enclosure to allow us to start accepting fox. Please reach out if you would like to help make this next dream a reality. 🥰

Last week we were honored to be asked to share our education animals and program at 2 branches of the Pickaway County Library (Circleville and Ashville) for their summer reading program. We are very grateful for the wonderful supply donations gathered at the branches to help our intakes. A huge thank you to everyone that contributed!
This Wednesday we are visiting the Ross County Parks summer program for kids, and next week the PARS program for at-risk children in Circleville.

We are getting lots of calls about fawns found alone.

Deer and rabbit mamas don’t stay with their babies. They know their presence brings predators. They watch from a distance. If chased by a predator they will run the opposite direction from the baby to lead the predator away. She will return at dusk to feed when it’s just dark enough that you won’t see her.

But should something happen to mom, like getting hit by a car, here are the signs to watch for. First look for dehydration. If dehydrated the baby’s ears will start curling up like potato chips. After that comes hungry. If hungry she will start crying and get up to go look for mama.

Information on the internet is all crap. Don't feed the baby! Well meaning people kill too many fawns with a bad diet. A bad diet is a horrible, slow, painful way to die.

She may leave her baby there for days and just come at dawn and dusk to feed. Baby is not big enough to keep up with her yet when she goes to eat or to outrun predators.

Part 3

Tipsy has been questioned again by authorities. She is one calm criminal who seems to have no remorse for her crimes.

05/02/2024

Part 2

She returned to the scene of the crime, but she had retained a lawyer and was not talking!

05/02/2024

Part 1

Tipsy was enjoying some exercise time last night playing in her swimming pool playground, so I decided to let her play while I ran upstairs to grab something to eat and wait for the baby opossums to arrive. This is what I returned to find.
