Today was a great family day for 3 fathers and their children. The weather was a bit 'brisk' but the kids hung in there and all accomplished taking an animal, with one taking her first. They were pumped afterwards and the dads were definitely happy. Gary decided to take a beautiful Red Sheep and a great looking Chocolate Fallow buck. We love seeing parents and children enjoying the outdoors together.

Mike returned for a fifth hunt with us, bringing along his son Cameron and grandson Julian for their fourth and third times respectively. They both elected to field dress their own animals. It is great that they are interested in learning the whole process. A couple of fine young men, Mike is certainly rightly proud of them 🙂.

A closeup of the coyote skull. You can see the brown mark on his face in the final picture. I certainly have to wonder exactly what happened and when to this guy, but, it was healed up and he was surviving.

The first time I went to Africa it became a life goal to take my own children to Africa someday, even though I didn't have kids at the time. This year I was able to fulfill that goal, for which I am eternally grateful. This year there have been trials (literally and figuratively) but Shawnee Ridge Hunting is still here, ready to surpass its 53rd year in a few months. We couldn't have done it without you, our friends and clients. We are blessed to have you all. Thank you.
Merry Christmas and Happy Holidays to you and yours!

Our friend Todd brought out his nephew Cody for a hunt again this year. Kody wanted a red colored hog and he certainly got a fine looking specimen! Todd and his dad run a free range whitetail hunt locally, so if you are interested look up Brushcreek Outfitters.

Daniel brought his son Jace for a hog hunt today. Jace had so much fun getting the first one, he asked if he could shoot another one, and dad said yes! Jace did great, making good shots on both pigs. He can't wait to come back for a ram!

Garrett and I hadn't been in the blind but a few minutes when he said "I see something way out in the field!". I had put out a pile of scraps the day before, and we were hoping to score on a coyote. I scanned the field but couldn't see anything, unfortunately there was a tree blocking me. I moved right and finally saw something move 200+ yards away. It looked small, and I wanted to make sure it wasn't a bobcat (which are not legal game in Ohio). It moved again and I saw a long, bushy tail, and Garrett said that he thought it was a small coyote. It went back into the woods before giving us a shot, and Garrett flipped on the call. Not 30 seconds later he said "There's one coming out to the right!". Indeed, a big dog was looking at the call, and would run forward a few steps, but always manage to stop behind some branches. He cut sideways, Garrett mouse squeaked at him ( the call had stopped momentarily) and the rifle roared. " You hit him! " He ran straight away and I shot again, the second round taking out a back leg.
We certainly didn't expect it to happen so fast, and we were certainly happy to take out this old dog. I was also happy to make memories with my son.
As I was skinning him I discovered the hole in his face, which has been there awhile. The skin had grown down in, and it didn't go all the way through.

Our friends from The Great White North returned once again to hunt with us the past couple of days. Li started things off on Friday with a gorgeous Painted Desert Ram. Saturday morning the fellas scored on a couple of really nice hogs, and in the afternoon Garrett took a beautiful Painted Desert Ram of his own. We had a great time with these guys, and it's always interesting to share stories and compare differences (and similarities) about gun ownership with folks from another country.
