Preparing for emergencies before they happen is an important part of our job.

With the Middlesex County 4H Fair going on this weekend on South Chelmsford Road, members of C-Shift spent part of their Friday getting the lay of the land. Firefighters discussed potential challenges and hazards, procedures, and other considerations when responding to fire and EMS emergencies on the fairgrounds.

Some of the other highlights from our visit:

Firefighters are helpers. Naturally, when we saw a large crowd working to husk a large pile of corn on the infield, we jumped in to lend a hand.

Or so we thought. Turns out it was the 11am Corn Husking Contest.

Firefighter Niemiera took home the 1st place blue ribbon. Firefighter Wilson was a close 2nd. Firefighter Caron stayed strong until the end, taking home 3rd.

Strong work, gang!

Firefighter Dias thought he saw a unicorn. Turns out it was a dwarf miniature horse. Thank you to the fair goers who took the time to explain the differences to us.

Firefighter Tuomi overcame his fear of Captain Crunch the snake with some help from Matt at Animal World Experiences.

Many selfies were had with Chubb's the gator.

It was a great day.

My son snapped this photo for me while I was laying inside an animal cage under construction. I spent almost the entire day on this build (and 4 hours the previous night). It's a new custom 6ft by 3ft cage for my Tegu "Drago". All of my custom cages have heated floor panels, full spectrum timed lighting, and automatic misting systems. I got the basic cage done enough to move him into it, but in the future I'd love to do some cement work in there to make it look and feel super natural. For now, he has his favorite lair- a huge plastic rock cave.

Cute photo of my African Pygmy Hedgehog "Mr. Pricklepants" taken during a recent meet & greets program. He knows my smell so he is lots calmer when I hold him instead of putting him in his fleece cuddle cup bed!

Our 2 Mississippi Map Turtles "Alan Grant" and Ian Malcolm" that now inhabit Jurassic Pond!

"Jurassic Pond" is born! This is our new 600 gallon indoor pond! The idea of this one is to give a natural semi-permanent home to our larger predatory fish. Right now the pond houses a silver arawana, spotted gar, red-tailed catfish, black bullhead, 3 yellow bullheads, 6 bluegill, a 20 inch pleco, a 15 inch pleco, 2 Mississippi map turtles, and a school of 20+ goldfish. A whole bunch more fish will be in here once they are large enough.

There are also over 20 species of water plants growing in here to help provide natural hide spots and filter the water. This is another "Father Fish" style setup, which means the base is organic soil covered in sand. Because of such a large scale, we went with 3 inches of soil and 6 inches of sand on the bottom. Looking forward to lots of photos/videos about this pond as well as underwater shots!

Update on our living room "grow out tank"! As you can see, the plants are absolutely thriving. The fish as growing like crazy. Our silver arawana has outgrown the tank and moved in to our 600 gallon pond. There are 3 new baby pacu in here now.
