Loose leash walking is actually pretty simple to teach. I have never encountered a dog that can’t learn this basic skill.

Most dogs can learn to walk calmly on a loose leash without ever needing a formal heel command.

Introducing a more structured retrieve.

We’re starting from a heel position and building clarity around the full behavior: retrieve, return, and finish by dropping the object in front.

Session 1 introducing “Center.”

New positions usually look a little messy at first — that’s part of the process.

We start by teaching the mechanics with a physical lure. Once the movement makes sense, we begin adding the verbal cue.

With a few more reps, this should be on verbal only.

A small skill that makes a big difference.

Teaching a dog to place their front paws on a step can make equipment handling much easier. With the front feet elevated, dogs are less likely to paw, squirm, or move around while gear is going on.

It also makes things easier for owners who have trouble bending down to their dog.

Today’s focus: handler engagement and teaching leash pressure in a distracting environment.

This is only his second time in a store. Real world reliability is built through clear communication one rep at a time.
