Dear valued Stillwater Equine Client,

Regretfully after 21 years with Stillwater Equine Veterinary Clinic Team Dr Toby Sheely has elected to depart the clinic and pursue other endeavors. The veterinarians and staff at the clinic will miss Dr Toby and wish him good luck in any and all new pursuits.

To those clients that have used Dr Toby consistently the Stillwater staff will be committed to helping you find another veterinarian or veterinarians from our team to help you care for your horse or horses. We have seven ambulatory veterinarians with a diverse set of skills and interest to meet your horse’s health needs.

In August we are excited to welcome Dr Zach Loppnow. Dr Zach is an Equine Surgeon with Minnesota ties, who is bringing his surgical expertise to our clinic. He will be managing surgical and emergency cases at our clinic.

If any of us at the clinic can help you with any questions that you may have during this time of transition, please reach us by phone or email.

Sincerely,

The Stillwater Equine Team

We love inspiring kids about all things vet med!

Dr Kati took a field trip to talk with middle schoolers about all things equine and veterinary medicine - from how she got into horses and her path to becoming a vet to some of her most memorable cases.

She really loved explaining her most used tools being a stomach tube and pump. 🤣

Spring is almost here! Which means…it's time to schedule your equine companion to receive their spring vaccinations!

If you are wondering what vaccinations your equine friend should receive, the answer is — There are no “one size fits all” vaccine recommendations. A veterinarian who knows your animal and your management system is your best resource to recommend what vaccines your equine should receive and with what frequency!

While vaccination does not prevent disease in all circumstances, a good immunization protocol minimizes the risk of infection and remains an essential component of responsible ownership. A vaccination appointment is also the perfect opportunity for a yearly check-up of your equine friend and a great way to catch any health concerns early.

If you have yet to contact your veterinarian about scheduling vaccinations, we encourage you to do it soon!

With spring only a few weeks away (🙌), it’s not too early to start thinking about a deworming plan for your equine companions.

If deworming is something you’ve been doing the same way for as long as you can remember, this year we encourage you to break tradition and work with your veterinarian instead. Thanks to tools like the f***l egg count, your horse doctor can help you devise a treatment tailored to the needs of your equine friend plus monitor the efficacy of the dewormer used last.

And before you dismiss this notion because you’ve been “doing it for years,” you should know that the old-school approach to deworming is quickly becoming outdated—not only a waste of money but it also builds drug resistance in the parasitic fauna of equines, which means we are running out of drugs that can effectively help us control parasite infections.

As always, consult your equine veterinarian to learn more and for questions specific to your animals!

Getting to know Dr. Zach Loppnow!

Dr. Loppnow spent four years working as an ambulatory equine associate on the west side of the Twin Cities. He fell in love with surgery, which took him to Iowa State University for a rotating internship, and then to the sunny shores of Monterey, California where he completed a 3-year surgical residency at Steinbeck Peninsula Equine Clinics. Professionally, he has a keen interest in lameness, arthroscopy, and soft tissue surgery, among others. He has authored papers on joint pathology and regional limb perfusions in the equine septic joint, and textbook chapters on disorders of the equine gastrointestinal system. When Zach isn't in the clinic you may find him and his wife of six years, Krista, enjoying the outdoors and camping when they can, reading any good book recommendations they find, and spending time giving back to their community.

UP NEXT later this week ..... What surgical services will Dr. Zach be providing at Stillwater Equine?
