The spine forms the central mechanical axis of the body, serving as a dynamic bridge between the forelimbs and hindlimbs. It transmits propulsive force generated by the hindquarters and absorbs impact through the forehand during
locomotion. This is because when the front foot contacts the ground, kinetic energy and force are transferred upward through the scapula into the thoracic vertebrae of the spine.

In herding breeds, particularly those bred for sustained trotting over long distances, a straight, well aligned back is crucial. It ensures efficient energy transfer, minimizes vertical displacement, and supports a flowing rhythmic gait.

A spinal curvature or sagging topline disrupts optimum gait mechanics, reduces the power of endurance, and compromise overall working ability.
