Long time no post.
Clover is a thriving 10 month old heifer with so much personality. She’s doing so well. And, she has horns!
Chloe has been struggling to keep weight on, please don’t judge me, it’s been a hard winter for her and I’m diligently trying to gain her weight back. Between deworming and feeding her endless amounts of hay and grain, I’m hopeful she begins gaining enough to get back on track. Next up is placing a magnet in her gut to help with any hardware she may have eaten.
Owning cattle is no easy feat, between the weather being crap and time being too short, I’m giving it my all to keep on top of all the issues.

Although this butthead got loose this past week and was running around like a wild headless chicken, I still love her to death and back, and I'm thankful for those who stopped to help especially when she was in the middle of the road. Clover, you brat, enjoy the snow and snuggles ❤️

How It All Started

Half Pint came along while I was feeding calves for my family’s farm. She was born on May 8, 2016 and was a smaller than average calf at birth. Because of her small size, I named her ‘Half Pint’. I immediately fell in love with her, she was the cutest thing! When she was playful, she would act like a dog, crouching down with her front legs like she wanted to pounce. I started taking her on walks on the calf halter around the farm, and she would follow me around so nicely. As she continued to grow, I was unable to continue taking her for walks because she was moved from the main calf barn to another growing calf area in another barn. But I never lost interest in her, and I often visited her to give her head scratches. I always called her by her name so she would recognize that it was me, her “momma”. She would always come up to me, even if she was laying down, she would get up and come right over to say her hellos.

Fast forward to May 2018, Half Pint was pregnant with her first calf, and due to calve at any moment. I wanted her home with me at my house so I could care for her and her new calf, so my uncles and cousin got her on the trailer and brought her home to me in her new paddock I had built with my dad. That day was May 10, 2018. That night, she calved a stillborn bull calf. It was sad, but it happens with first calf heifers. I knew that I needed to find her a substitute calf, so the next day I called around to a few farms, and luckily I found Half Pint a 2 day old bull calf. I got in my car, drove to the nearby farm, and loaded the calf up into the third row of my car, to bring him home to his new mommy. I named him, ‘Half Cup’. Now, we’re in the middle of June, and Half Pint LOVES her calf dearly. Although it took a week for her to get used to him, when she finally took to him, she attached on tight and is very protective of him.

Along with Half Pint and Half Cup, I also have 30 chickens free ranging in the paddock. The chickens lay eggs for me daily, and are very well cared for. Luckily both Half Pint and Half Cup get along well with the chickens, and barely notice that they are there. Once in a while the chickens get in the way, but Half Pint puts them in their place, and tells them to back off.

So, that’s how it all started. And now I have Half Pint Homestead.
