Diagnostic Blocks are a tool in every Veterinarian's toolbox, and this case is no different! This horse has had previous lameness issues with the left hind limb, and today his owner brought him in to get to the bottom of it. Dr. Felipe used the Ultrasound for a guided Coxofemoral Block during the lameness exam to pinpoint exactly where this horse's lameness is!

We ended up not only doing a lameness evaluation and hip block, but we did a CT Scan of this horse's SI and Hip so stay tuned for the videos and imaging!

A Club Foot is a common deformity found in horse's of all breeds. With a few different causes, it can be a long process to manage so early intervention is key! The younger a horse is, the more options we have.

One of the options open to this specific case was an Inferior Check Ligament Desmotomy! In this surgery, Dr. Felipe severed the inferior check ligament to relieve tension on the deep digital flexor tendon (DDFT), helping correct the angular limb deformity. This surgery was textbook and this horse is on the road to recovery already!

When it comes to equipment in the surgery suite, few things are as constant as our trusty X-Ray Machines. From placing screws, removing OCDs or repairing fractures, we rely on our X-Rays to guide us alongside arthroscopic camera footage and now CT Imaging!

Last week was a record week for Dr. Felipe and the SEH Surgery Team! We had not one but two Olecranon Fracture Repairs in one day! These types of fractures are most commonly found in young horses, under two years old, and must be monitored closey to ensure the implant and screws do not interfere with limb growth.

While these types of surgeries are long and complicated, our team powered through and seeing these foals improve every day make it so worth it!

This past week Dr. Felipe had a case where he suspected a horse had some significant neck arthritis, so to the CT we went! Our awesome team at North Texas Equine Imaging got to work and got this done so efficently! The imaging report revealed that Dr. Felipe was correct, and once the horse recovered from anesthesia, he treated him appropriatley!

Caudal epidurals provide targeted analgesia of the perineal region by desensitizing the sacrococcygeal nerves and allow procedures to be performed safely and effectively under standing anesthesia.

Performed at the sacrococcygeal space (identified by tail movement), a needle is introduced at a 45ยฐ angle toward the tail. Entry into the epidural space is confirmed using the โ€œhanging dropโ€ technique, where a drop of lidocaine is drawn into the needle hub when the needle is positioned correctly.

Commonly utilized in equine surgery for conditions such as rectovaginal tears, they reduce straining, improve surgical precision, and enhance patient comfort.

A decent percentage of cases (and surgeries) Dr. Felipe sees at SEH are respiratory issues. Upper airway endoscopy enables us to have direct visualization of the nasal passages, pharynx, larynx, trachea, and guttural pouches, allowing detailed assessment of both structural integrity and dynamic function.

Indications to issues can include: abnormal respiratory noise, exercise intolerance, coughing, nasal discharge, and poor performance. Both resting and dynamic endoscopy can be utilized to identify functional airway collapse or obstruction not evident at rest.

This horse underwent surgery for an OCD Lesion in this joint, and when Dr. Felipe inserted the needle to distend it there was a lot of fluid that came out!
