🚨Graduate Alert🚨

"First Learn Stand, Then Learn Fly. Nature Rule, Daniel-san, Not Mine.”

-Mr. Miyagi
The Karate Kid

“Kid” will be Hip #144 at the BFA Select Sale at the Lazy E on the 21st of this month. His breeders, Patty and Bryan McDonald, sent him to us with the goal of giving him a head start in life and making the most of his time at sale prep with Red River Equine’s team. We feel beyond blessed every single day to work with the quality breeders and owners we do.

It truly takes a village and we are sincerely grateful to be part of theirs. 🏆

In this clip you’ll see Clayton handling a 2025 filly by Countin Hot Checks out of Kit KatNLizzie by Kit Kat Sugar. This filly belongs to the Rocking R Ranch and will go on to be started and trained by Scott Amos Cutting Horses.

This clip is a great peek at one of the simple exercises we use to begin to prepare a future performance horse for their big kid start and beyond. Sending this filly around the pole and back creates an opportunity for her to begin connecting the incremental lessons that led up to this exercise. She’s learning to focus on what Clayton is communicating to her via the feel in the lead rope and his body language. Watch as she figures out right before your eyes how to focus and respond to what’s being asked of her with her whole body. She has been prepared to follow the feel in the lead and to think about her foot placement. The pole raises the game appropriately to allow her to begin understanding how to manage her feet so that her front and back move and respond smoothly. She’s been bred to focus and respond to cattle so this little simulation is just the ticket to begin softly bringing that forward.

We use this sending exercise with all the babies when they are ready. Although it’s easy to imagine how this might plant some seeds with a barrel bred baby the more subtle aspects of building feel combined with teaching a young horse to manage its feet, engage its front, middle, and back end in a balanced manner has obvious benefits for any future athlete.

We hope you enjoy watching this impressive filly as much as we do.

NOTE: Unlike us, horses are lateral learners. That means every bending, turning, lateral yielding thing we do with them is building one of the other ultimate goals, straightness.

Remembering today ♥️🇺🇸

This photo is of Clayton’s favorite uncle “Uncle Ken” (Sergeant Kenneth E. Price) when he was stationed in Kellogg Idaho in preparation for WW II. He was 22 and fortunate to come home after the war. Upon his return the sitting President presented Uncle Kenn with “the Silver Star for conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity while serving as acting platoon sergeant of Company E, Second Battalion, Twenty-second Marines (Reinforced), First Provisional Marines Brigade in action against enemy Japanese forces on Guam, Mariana Islands from 21 July to 10 Aug 1944. Fearlessly leaving his foxhole despite a heavy enemy artillery barrage which was falling on his lines on the night of 25 July, Sergeant Price went to the aid of three wounded Marines in a nearby position and promptly administered first aid thereby saving the lives of two of the men who might otherwise have perished. Undaunted by another intense barrage of hostile artillery fire the following morning, Sergeant Price inspired his men to greater efforts in repelling the enemy by his skillful directions and personal example. His resourceful initiative, courage and devotion to duty were in keeping with the highest traditions of the United States Naval Service.”

Clayton knew his uncle had “received a medal” but Uncle Kenn never talked about his time as a marine or why he had received the medal. A quick search uncovered Uncle Kenn’s story of true valor 🇺🇸

🇺🇸Sincerest gratitude and and most heartfelt thanks today and every day to all of the courageous individuals whose lives were impacted or given because they chose to fight for our great country.

Nothing like a windy day to up the anti! Clayton likes to pull out his fringey chinks because well, fringe in the wind happens. The ball volunteered. This c**t and the c**t in the pen behind him came in together. They are both getting comfortable flying solo. So many factors involved in growing up!

In this clip Clayton is handling “Valentine”, an 8 month old filly by Sannman out of The Model Figure by Playguns Hancock. This reel is a cut from her first session being handled from horseback. The link below provides an opportunity to see the session in its entirety.

Man we love working these kids from another horse! Too many benefits to list but a few are touched on in the full length video. Additionally these sessions are a stupendous opportunity for interested parties to really see who a young horse is; how they process, how they move, how they respond, among other things.

Valentine leads, loads, baths, stands politely for the farrier, and has had her first trim and vaccinations. We invite you check out our page or YouTube channel for footage titled Tandem Weanlings Session for further insights into her stellar potential and personality.

📚Tandem Weanling Session: Valentine and Lilly📚

https://youtu.be/bh-zf7HZqJ4?si=NYQckpBOhKnvqqQC

In this clip, Clayton’s handling two beautiful bay roan weanlings, Valentine and Lilly. Valentine is by Sannman out of Jolly N Sassy by Playguns Hancock. Lilly is by Starlight Oak 017 out of The Model Figure by Playguns Hancock.

These two fillies are jam-packed with potential! Handling them in tandem provides us a unique opportunity to confirm where we’re at with Valentine, who’s right around the thirty-day point, and to afford Lilly, newer to the program, the influence of a buddy. A double session also allows us to make the most of the unexpected training opportunities that arise organically when the environment is less controlled. We’re building for life outside the round pen.

We hope you find this session as interesting as we did!

SIDE NOTE: These fillies are both thinkers and have very different learning requirements. Valentine wants time to be sure of what she’s about to do and who she’s doing it for, while Lilly is content to process what’s being asked without as much thought to why or who’s asking. In the clip, you can see Valentine put together that the rope is moving her leg; she goes to mouth it a few times. Then you see it register that Clayton is at the other end of the rope; she makes her opinion known without too much zeal and then says “Ok,” I can do that for you. Both fillies are processing at the same rate. Both fillies are equally good-minded. This is a difference in how they learn. These moments tell us how the individual needs new skills presented in order for us to set them up in the short term for long-term success.

BREEDING NOTES: Starlight Oak 017, aka Pocket, stands at KB Ranch & Stallion Station in Comanche Texas. Both these fillies were made at KB Ranch & Stallion Station.

🚨 BOTH FILLIES ARE AVAILABLE 🚨
