Hooves & Horizons

Hooves & Horizons Kari Wiens
Hooves & Horizons is my riding life in the Pacific Northwest — spicy horses, real miles, and the adventures that come with them.

Riding, training & everything in between. This page is designed for the purpose of connecting with my fellow horse friends who are interested in following my endeavors in the equine industry. I am not officially training right now but could be considered a working student under Sarah Orloff with Still Waters Equitation. She helps me with mine and I help her by doing the basic stuff like helping ge

tting horses fit and in shape and working the greener horses. We clinic together and I take lessons from her. My passion is endurance riding but I actively train in classical dressage when I can’t get out on the trail. My specialty is getting horses trail broke and instilling confidence and work ethic.

An absolutely gorgeous Memorial Day weekend ride out at Santiam Forest. Boy is this the time of year to be out! The green is really that bright and the sky that blue! Khat and I had a blast on the 8.5 mile loop.

Absolutely gorgeous ride at Silver Falls State Park today. Khat and I did the 8 mile loop. She was feeling good rearing to go!! Might make it to an an endurance ride this year yet.

Had an amazing ride this last weekend up in Sisters. I was just ahead of the storm that rolled in as I was pulling out. Perfect temps, soft damp footing and spicy red mare. Did 10 miles up to the top of 4 mile butte and back down. Hands down one of my favorite rides in a long time.

Oh my goodness! I was huffing and puffing lol. Lucy is one of those horses that can look a lot easier to ride than she actually is. But she got into this exercise and we had some fun. Repeated it tonight and she got even better!

Khat says lesson days are hard work!! We both worked our butt off today. She’s doing so good and I’m finally starting to feel the strength building.

Braved the cold and got out this chilly but absolutely beautiful sunny day. Went up to Graham’s Corral in Sisters and did the Fourmile Butte loop. 9.5 miles total. It was so quiet and peaceful. I’ve known about this loop for years and have ridden parts of the area but have never done the official loop. I thinks it’s my new favorite. Perfect amount of elevation change and great footing. Can’t wait to do it again when the snow is gone.

Got to play with my baby girl a bit and she was feeling it!! She’s getting so big! She will be 2 in May and this is the year we can actually do a little more together. Hoping to get her ponying good off of Khat and be able to pony her out are some trails and take her to a few places for exposure. Will be working on fine tuning our leading skills and doing some baby trailering rides to start with.

*sound on for dragon snorts* This is what happens when you leave a young chestnut mare sitting for a month out of work. 😅 Took the holidays off and this was my first day back to work her. Preemptively put her in the round pen cause it was cold and sunny…

Dental day at the barn today! Khat got her teeth and annual shots and Charm and Norah got their shots.

For those who don’t understand what is happening in the photos: Khat is sedated and they use a contraption to hold the mouth open while they grind down and smooth out their teeth. Horses will often unevenly wear their teeth down creating sharp points or uneven bites which in turn can cause many other issues. They are all a little different in their needs but generally 1-1.5 years they have to get done.
