It’s the time of year when canine cough (aka kennel cough) is prevalent. We have been informed of a few cases. Many pathogens can cause the group of illnesses commonly referred to as canine cough. The coughing associated with canine cough sounds like the dog is attempting to clear his/her throat or cough something up. It sounds like honking. Typically, white foamy phlegm accompanies the cough. Canine cough is generally not serious and is equivalent to the human cold. Young dogs with naive immune systems and older dogs with suppressed immune systems are mostly likely to be infected. Even if your dog is vaccinated for Bordetella, there are many other agents that can cause this respiratory infection called infectious tracheobronchitis. The canine cough takes 5-7 days to manifest itself after exposure so it is virtually impossible to pinpoint the source. We ask that you be respectful of other dog owners and not bring your dog to South Paws if he/she is coughing at all. Generally, mild forms of canine cough to not require treatment. The incubation period is 5-7 days and coughing usually lasts 7-10 days. Dogs will be sent home immediately if they are symptomatic. We also ask you to refrain from taking your dog to dog parks and other social settings while canine cough is making its rounds.
We continue to clean all surfaces with Rescue and/or Odoban, sanitize all buckets, and wash our hands regularly.
We hope you understand that just like a child’s school, we are unable to prevent the introduction of an airborne virus into our facility. We would appreciate it if you would let us know if your dog is coughing.
