This is a very informative read on why your pet birds should be given fresh veggies daily!
We’ve been getting a ton of questions like:
“How often do you feed chop?”
“Do they get it with their pellets?”
“What’s the secret to getting picky birds to eat it?”
Here’s the answer:
✨ Every. Single. Day. ✨
Here’s how we do it:
We start by lining their bowls with their dry mix (a handy pre-mix of pellets and seeds we keep in big bins—because who has time to measure every morning? Not a rescue with 50+ birds thats for sure!).
Then we add a hefty spoonful of chop right on top. “Hefty” is a vibe, not a measurement, so adjust depending on whether you’re feeding a budgie or a macaw.
Now for the fun part — the trickery.
We chop everything super fine so it sticks to the dry food. Even the pickiest eater has to work hard to avoid it. (Spoiler: they can’t.)
Want to go full ninja? Give the bowl a quick shake before serving. Now the chop is EVERYWHERE.
At first they’re like, “Ew, what’s this wet stuff on my food?”
Then they’re like, “Wait… this is good sh*t.”
And suddenly they’re full-blown chop converts.
Why bother with all this veggie stuff?
Because a varied, fresh diet is crucial to your bird’s health. Daily veggies give them essential vitamins, minerals, and fiber that pellets alone can’t provide. We toss in just a bit of fruit for sweetness (think apple slices or berries), but too much sugar — even the natural kind — can lead to long-term health issues. We pick 1 fruit a week, the rest are veggies, we rotate a grain (chickpeas, black beans, pasta) and rotate a leafy green (kale, spinach, mixes).
Balanced nutrition isn’t just about fueling their bodies — it supports better feather condition, leveled hormones, energy levels, and even behavior. Plus, combining veggies, pellets, and seeds encourages natural foraging behavior. It keeps their minds and beaks busy, and that’s a big win for mental stimulation and enrichment.
