We would like to share with you some bitter sweet news. As many of you may already know, Dr. Torei's last day with ABVS will be Wednesday 05/27/26. Her and her husband will be moving back down state to be closer to family. To say that we are sad to see her leave is an understatement, but we are truly happy for her and wish only the best for her in this next chapter. Not only is she an outstanding doctor, she is a good friend to many of us and she will be greatly missed.
Dr. Torei, we love you and want you to know that what ever clinic your feet land at, they will be lucky to have you, but Arenac Bay Veterinary Services door will always be open to you if you ever want to come back home ❤️
If you get the pleasure of seeing this lovely lady today, please wish her the best!

Dr. Torei performing a recent Pyometra surgery!

Pyometra is a serious infection of the uterus that affects unspayed female dogs and cats. It can develop quickly and become life-threatening if not treated right away.

💡 What causes pyometra? After a heat cycle, hormonal changes can create the perfect environment for bacteria to grow, leading to infection.

⚠️ Signs to watch for:
Lethargy (low energy)
Fever
Loss of appetite
Increased thirst or urination
Vomiting
Swollen/painful abdomen
Vaginal discharge (not always present)
‼️Important: Some pyometra cases are “closed,” meaning there is no visible discharge, making it harder to detect.

🏥 Why it’s an emergency: Pyometra can lead to sepsis, uterine rupture, organ failure due to toxin build-up, and possibly death if not treated quickly.

🩺 Treatment: The primary treatment is emergency surgery (spay) to remove the infected uterus. In some cases, hospitalization and intensive care are needed. Medical management with antibiotics exists for an “open” pyometra (cases when the cervix is open allowing infection to drain), however surgery is preferred to prevent sepsis and recurrence.

❤️ Prevention: The best way to prevent pyometra is to spay your pet. Spaying not only eliminates the risk of pyometra but also reduces the risk of certain cancers.

📅 When to call your vet: If your unspayed pet seems “off” after a heat cycle, don’t wait—contact your veterinarian immediately.
