So friends.....I know I'm constantly posting fundraising for Catarct Research. I have been part of this project since the beginning more than 6 years ago. American spaniel club Foundation is very thankful to everyone who has participated in anyway, shape or form. From donations, or our fundraising events. We are out asking for everyone to see if they can dig a little deeper. We have 70,000.00 left to raise in the last year of our contract. Dr. Aguirre and his team have made some huge headway in the research in the last 6 months which is great news for our breed. With the DNA marker breeders will be able to test parents and over time will be able to eliminate this disease. I speak from a now very personal level with ACE being diagnosed with Cataracts at 7.5 years old. I am neither embarrassed or ashamed to talk about this. As a breeder, we went above protocol and do our eye exams every 6 months on our stud dogs, not the 1 year suggestion . And yet we are still affected by this. So I had a thought.....what if, we had 250 people pledge just 25.00 a month for the next 12 months?? We would reach our 70,000.00 goal. Seems like it could be a possibility and an achievable goal. So I'm pleading with all of you to help us out.. If you cant do 25.00 maybe even just 10.00 a month?? Or even just a 1 time donation. To everyone who makes a monthly pledge through the month of August will get their name in a draw for a 200 sized wire crate stuffed with all things doggy, beds, toys, bowls, treats etc. Below is the link to ASCF on the Legacy Giving page, scroll to the bottom to the PayPal button where you can choose your donation amount, make it a monthly payment and choose payment option through credit card or paypal. Again thank you to everyone who has supported this cause

In many ways, a gift to the American Spaniel Club Foundation through your will, living trust, retirement fund remainders or other estate planning vehicle can be the perfect way to give. Future gifts planned today allow you to retain complete control of, and access to, your property for your own need...

UPDATE ON UNIVERSITY OF PA / DR. AGUIRRE CATARACT GENETIC STUDY
More than a hundred ASC members and Cocker Spaniel fanciers, including many of today's most prominent breeders, gathered at the Purina Event Center during the ASC National in St. Louis early July to hear world-renowned canine ophthalmological researcher Dr. Gustavo Aguirre speak about the genetic Cocker cataract research project being conducted at the University of Pennsylvania, funded by American Spaniel Club Foundation. If Dr. Aguirre and his team succeed, it will be the end of a fifty-year long struggle to find the cause of inherited cataracts in the Cocker Spaniel and will broaden the gene pool by allowing carriers and affected cockers to be bred without devastating consequences. For those of you who were unable to attend the presentation, a video of the entire event will be posted on either the ASC or ASCF site in the next month or so.
Dr. Aguirre made this trip to the Cocker National to update the group on the study, including the continuing challenges his team faces after six months of research. The main challenge continues to be the critical need for more Cockers to be included in the study – “affected, relatives of affected, and older clear cockers and their relatives that will provide the “control group”.
So, what was the take-away from the afternoon and what can you do?
In a nutshell, 15 genes have already been eliminated as genetic markers for inherited Cocker cataracts. But, as Dr. Aguirre responded when asked about the chance of success, “…. The process is a long, arduous one that will require lots of support and participation from those who love the breed…but, with a little luck… “
In past research projects, the team has had success with 20-40 samples in each group. So now, it’s up to you!
WE NEED YOUR COCKERS!
*Cockers (2-5 and 6-9) – AFFECTED AND CLEAR - and their relatives (most importantly, siblings and parents)
*CLEAR Cockers, 9 years and older

HERE IS HOW YOU CAN INCLUDE YOUR DOG(S) IN THE STUDY:
PLEASE NOTE – ALL PARTICIPATION IS 100% CONFIDENTIAL

*If you are bringing your dog(s) to your own veterinary ophthalmologist, go to the following website to download complete information on how to participate and to print out
the research form for the study:

PLEASE NOTE - it is crucial for your doctor to complete the research form with
detailed information and drawings.
