We will be CLOSED tomorrow, Wednesday, August 26, for our staff reset day.

Since kitten season began, we’ve been setting aside every other Wednesday as a dedicated deep cleaning and staff training day. These days are incredibly important to the work we do and, ultimately, to the animals in our care.

Tomorrow, our team will be:
🧹 Deep cleaning and resetting the building
📚 Completing staff training and continuing education
🐱 Reviewing protocols and procedures
💪 Taking a much-needed opportunity to regroup and recharge

Shelter life can move at an incredible pace, especially during kitten season. Taking a day to pause, clean, train, organize and reset helps us make sure we are providing the best possible care for the animals while continuing to serve our community safely and effectively.

We know an unexpected closure can be an inconvenience, and we truly appreciate your understanding and support. ❤️

We’ll be back open and ready to see everyone on Thursday at 11am.

We DO NOT Understand It…

Rocky waits and waits, hoping someone might see past his shy kennel presence (though he is not shy, just completely overwhelmed by the stressful shelter environment). He is the complete package: need an exercise buddy? He’s your dude. Feel like chilling and watching some TV? No problem for him, give him a chew toy and a bed and he’ll be ready when you are. At 5-years old Rocky is no longer a puppy but he has a joy for life when he’s out of the shelter that is infectious. He will make you laugh and brighten your day, maybe pull you around a bit (he is a strong boy who does need to work on his leash manners), and be as loyal a dog as one could ask for.

Rocky is constantly overlooked and we just do not understand it, as we have posted him many times with no one coming to see him. He is an amazing (yes, we use that word a lot for him) dog who has lived with other dogs, is neutered, and his adoption fee has been sponsored. We do not know his history with cats for those who may have felines at home and always recommend slow intros with new pets.

Rocky is one of those dogs who will make whoever ends up being his forever home extremely, extremely, lucky. The kind of furry family member you won’t be able to imagine your home without. He deserves it beyond measure and we do not know how else to describe him other than he is just an amazing boy.

If you are ready to give Rocky his freedom ride and a lifetime full of adventure and care, please know the following:

• Please visit the shelter. Our staff will be able to fully answer any questions potential adopters may have in a timely and complete manner.
• Picture ID/proof of current address is required at time of adoption.
• Please bring any other resident pups for a meet-and-greet. The shelter conducts adoptions on a first-come, first-served basis and concludes adoption services at 5 PM.

🐾 FROM SHELTER TO HOME: QUINTESSA & HAMILTON 🐾

We love hearing from animals who were adopted from Stafford County Animal Shelter and seeing how they are doing years later. Quintessa, aka Stink Bug, and Hamilton, aka PussnBoots, were adopted as young kittens and are now thriving at 3 and 4 years old.

Their adopter, Kymberly, shared:

It was such a pleasure meeting you last weekend at the free adoption event.
I wanted to put together some updates for you about the two kittens I adopted.

I got Quintessa, aka Stink bug in 10/22 and Hamilton, aka PussnBoots, on 6/23.

They have been the light of my life and are such super sweet and kind of sour lol kitties. They love to play together and can fetch their toys. Hamilton knows how to open the laundry room door to sunbathe in the afternoon. Quintessa (Quinn) likes to look outside at her flower garden I made especially for her. She will spend most of the day watching the birds and bees fly around to her flowers.

Again, thank you for spending time talking to me, and I just wanted to say thank you also for allowing such wonderful little babies to come into my life.

Quintessa and Hamilton were adopted as young kittens and are now 3 and 4 years old. Kymberly has continued their veterinary care and sent us their health records, including Hamilton's sterilization paperwork.

This is what we want for every animal leaving our shelter: a home where they are cared for, kept healthy, spayed or neutered, and vaccinated throughout their lives.

As a municipal open admission shelter, we rely on our community to help us continue giving animals that opportunity. Every adoption creates space for another animal who needs shelter, and responsible spay/neuter and vaccination help protect both individual pets and the community.

CALLING PARAKEET/BUDGIE LOVERS!

This handsome fella is available for adoption! He was surrendered to us yesterday and does not come with supplies. Please be aware of the care requirements of budgies.

108 days…

That is the combined time that three seniors have spent here at the shelter and we cannot understand why. River (10yo, 42 days), Ollie (11yo, 62 days), and Otto (4 days) may be golden but they have so much life left and deserve to be in a home.

Ollie (Miniature Pinscher/Jack Russell Terrier mix, 11yrs) came to us under heartbreaking reasons. His elderly owner had passed away and his other owner was not able to take care of him alone. The painstaking decision had to be made to surrender him and this little guy has been waiting ever since with NO adoption interest. Ollie has tested well with other dogs, has lived with cats and birds, and has a stubborn streak at times that is befitting of his happy little self. Ollie is friendly with people and prefers not to share high-value treats with other animals though he shared the cats’ food in his previous home. He would do best with someone home for a large time of the day, as he was his owner’s constant companion.

River came to us as a stray and despite efforts to contact her previous owner on her microchip, she was never reclaimed. River may be 10, but she is an amazing girl who has tested well with other dogs, has lived with cats previously, and would likely be fine with respectful children. She is spayed, housebroken, and walks great on a leash. She may be a little stiff at times, but a comfy bed and some TLC should help this in a loving home.

Otto has just recently been surrendered to us and at eight, he is the youngest of the bunch. He would prefer a home without small children, and we are not entirely sure if he has been around other dogs or cats before, but he is such a happy-go-lucky guy that we would recommend doing meet-and-greets. His adoption fee is $45 and he is neutered.

🐾 MEET SELKET! 🐾
Selket is one of those dogs who just needs someone willing to slow down and get to know her. ❤️
This beautiful 2-year-old Husky mix came to us as a stray, and she's currently working through heartworm treatment while putting on some much-needed weight. She's been showing us more and more of her personality, and we think there's a lot to love underneath that beautiful Husky coat!
Selket LOVES getting outside. Give her some room to run and she turns into a little athlete, happily making laps around the yard before settling back down to explore and hang out with her people. Once she's had a chance to decompress, she can focus much better and has even shown us that she knows how to sit!
She's still learning her basic commands and manners, so she's looking for someone who will enjoy helping her learn through patience, consistency, and positive reinforcement.
And here's something we didn't expect—Selket is actually a pretty great grooming buddy! 🥰 She allowed us to brush out all that loose shedding fur and even leaned into the brush. She's still learning that paw handling and nail trims can be okay, but she's already showing us that she's capable of making progress when given time and gentle encouragement.
Selket is a sensitive girl who does best with people who pay attention to her body language and let her process new experiences at her own pace. She's shown interest in other dogs, but introductions should be slow and thoughtful so everyone has time to get comfortable.
She's not yet spayed and is currently working through her heartworm treatment, but we're already seeing this girl blossom.

We are down to our last bit of kitty food and need our communities help to keep these little bellies full! We will accept any brand of cat or kitten food.

Right now, the Stafford County Animal Shelter has more than 50 kittens in foster care and over 70 cats at the shelter—that’s a LOT of hungry bellies depending on them every single day!

Their foster families are working around the clock to care for these vulnerable kittens, and keeping everyone fed is one of their biggest ongoing needs. Every bag, every can, and every donation makes a difference.

🙏 If you’re able to donate cat or kitten food, the shelter would be incredibly grateful. Whether you can send a case, a bag, or even just a few cans, it all adds up and helps them care for the cats and kittens who are counting on them.
