Sadly I feel this needs to be shared.
Good Monday morning, friends, family, aunties, uncles, and even the haters! I hope all of you had a wonderful weekend with those who matter!
Before I begin, let me be clear, I have NEVER spoken ill of Chris and never will. After five days of gathering information and learning about him and his rescue from so many, I have NO doubt that he had a BEAUTIFUL heart. On this, the one week anniversary of his passing, as well as over 100 cat's deaths, and countless more who are burned, lost, traumatized... I want to tell the true story.
I oft say that the term "hoarder" has such a negative connotation, and it shouldn't. It's been MY experience that hoarders have beautiful hearts and the BEST intentions... until they're in over their head. Sadly, Chris was in over his head.
The fact is, his death and the death and suffering of all the cats was TOTALLY preventable. Happy Cats Sanctuary was a DUMPING ground for all the homeless cats in Brookhaven and Chris couldn't say, "No", because of his beautiful heart.
After speaking to countless individuals from NY/LI I was/am saddened by what I learned. People who claim to be rescues used Chris and dumped cats regularly. As rescues, they should've been HELPING Chris, not adding to the amount of cats he was caring for. I've dealt with hoarding situations before and I TAKE cats from the property, not ADD them.
There is no way ANYONE could take care of each and every cat, so although they had LOVE, food in their belly, a roof over their head, most were medically unwell, despite Chris' best efforts. When you have that many cats, illnesses circulate and continue to circulate.
And what did his "friends" do? Cut holes in the netting that he had in the back and dumped cats (you know who you are), raise their own money to "save" cats, and then turn around and dump them in his sanctuary...
What I've learned in talking to countless people who are close to the situation and are on the inside, saddens me. Chris was used. Chris deserved better. The cats deserved better.
Although I can't name the names of all who participated in the dumping, all you have to do is look at all the people who are "helping" clean this situation up.
I can name one, because he's publicly admitted to ADDING cats to a hoarding situation. His name is John Debacker. He claims he only gave Chris 10 cats. John "saves" cats, receives donations, and put them in danger by placing them in a hoarding situation. That's not rescue.
Chris was NOT responsible for this tragedy. Although his "friends", Brookhaven Animal Control, Suffolk Co DA's office, BEAST, and every single person who took cats to Chris or turned a blind eye is CULPABLE. You all have blood on your hands.
You took advantage of this kind-hearted soul and because of it, he's gone. Cats are dead. Cats are traumatized. Cats are suffering. Because of YOU.
For those who continue to bash me, if you weren't so obtuse you'd understand that I'm NOT the enemy. When I became a rescue I didn't just set out to rescue cats where I reside. We rescue cats from all over the world. Philippines, Morocco, Roatan, UK, Texas, Illinois, Ohio, California, FL, NC...I could go on and on, but it's moot.
Aside from the tragedy, what I find MOST sad, is that the two ladies who continued to sound the alarm about this hoarding situation and the DANGERS involved, have been excoriated and have received death threats because John Debecker PUBLICLY outed them and put their lives in jeopardy!!!He also publicly accused them of starting the fire, which has been ruled an accident. I hope they sue him for EVERYTHING he will ever have.
It's a backwards world we live in when we PRAISE the people who dumped cats, but threaten the ones who were trying to PREVENT this tragedy and openly accuse them of starting the damn fire!!!!!
Chris and the kitties would still be alive if his "friends" were true friends. That's a FACT.
For Chris, you're at peace now. You no longer have to carry the weight of the world on your shoulders trying to care for all the cats that your "friends" kept bringing you. You rest now.
For those so intent on accusing me of such horrific things, making a mockery of my disabilty, picking me apart...why don't you use that same energy and place the anger where it belongs?
And no, for those of you wondering, this is not the documentation that I'll be dropping tonight. This is an example of the suffering at the sanctuary. Those cats and Chris are in a FAR better place. 💔😭💖🐈🐾🙏🏼🌈
