THIS! So completely accurate. Another small barn owner friend shared this so I had to as well. We work so hard to make sure each horse in our care stays happy and healthy. We worry about them like they are our own, we certainly don’t do it for the money. We do it for the horse. We do it for the owners that have become part of our barn family. Being able to give them the peace of mind knowing that their baby is living a fat happy life, in a genuinely caring environment. Those are the things that have continued to motivate us for the last 22yrs. We may complain when the ground is covered in ice or the humidity is 3711 degrees but we still CHOOSE to keep doing it every day. Clearly I have no plans of ever becoming a millionaire. lol.

🐴 The $300 Horse Boarding Problem

If you own a horse, this post might make you uncomfortable — but it needs to be said.

As someone who has spent years feeding horses before sunrise and cleaning stalls long after dark, I’ve watched this pattern happen over and over again.

You see the ads everywhere.

“Full care board – $300/month.”
Hay 24/7. Grain included. All the amenities.

And you wonder…

How are they doing it so cheap?

Because the truth is — horses aren’t cheap to care for.

Even if someone grows their own hay there are still costs:
fuel, equipment, repairs, labor, land, and time.

So when board is that cheap, something usually gets cut.

Maybe it’s feed.
Maybe it’s stall cleaning.
Maybe turnout quietly disappears.
Maybe water buckets only get filled once a day.

It doesn’t happen overnight.

It happens slowly… until one day someone sees your horse and says:

“Wow… he looks thin.”

You go home, look at old photos, and realize they’re right.

So you move your horse to a higher-end barn.

Now board is $700… $800… sometimes $1,000+ a month.

Your horse looks great again — but now you’re working so many hours just to afford it that you barely get to see them.

And that’s when people start leaving the horse world completely.

But there’s a third option that often gets overlooked.

Small private barns.

Not the mega barns.

Not the ultra-cheap barns.

The quiet, middle-of-the-road places where the owner does the work themselves because they can’t afford employees.

The places where your horse isn’t just a stall number.

Where feed is adjusted individually.
Where someone notices if your horse doesn’t finish dinner.
Where care is personal because the barn is small enough to truly manage.

These barns often sit half empty because they’re not flashy and they’re not the cheapest.

But many of them offer the best balance of care, affordability, and peace of mind in the horse world.

Sometimes the best place for your horse isn’t the cheapest or the fanciest.

Sometimes it’s the place where you can walk out to the pasture after a long day, breathe, and simply watch your horse be a horse.

❤️

And if you’re lucky enough to find one of those small barns that truly cares, hold onto it.

Those places are usually run by people who love horses more than profit, who do the work themselves every day, and who treat every horse like part of their own herd.

Small barns are the heart of the horse world.

Now I’m curious…

Horse owners — what matters most to you in a boarding barn?

• Price
• Quality of care
• Amenities
• Quiet environment

And barn owners — what do you think is the biggest challenge in horse boarding today?

👇 Let’s talk about it.

❤️🐴❤️🐴❤️. This is so perfectly said. School horses set your entire foundation. They tolerant way more than they should. We come to take that for granted sometimes, yet they continue to take care of us anyways. They could very easily humble us and remind us that they don’t HAVE to tolerate our mistakes. They CHOOSE to tolerate us bc of the love and respect we show them. Always thank whatever horse you’re riding, remember they CHOOSE to tolerate us.

They are never just RIDING SCHOOL PONIES❤️🐴

One day you may move onto bigger, fancier horses, but never forget the school horse who made you, as without them, you wouldn’t be able to ride anything at all.

The patient soul that tolerated your bouncing while you figured out how to sit the trot.

The kind mare that didn’t walk off when you stumbled up the mounting block, trying to get your foot in the stirrup.

The sweet gelding that picked up the trot even though your body was telling him to do the exact opposite.

The saintly angel that never spooked, which was a dam good thing because your balance was precarious at best.

Too often we forget where we came from. We move on to the next chapter in our lives and say, “Oh my gosh, I’m learning so much! I’m going so far! I could never do this kind of thing on that old school horse!”

But infact you could, you were just not ready to do all these things back then.

But that school horse gave you the confidence to move forward. That school horse took care of you in all respects and allowed you to take the time you needed to find your way. You couldn’t have become the rider you are today without that riding school horse, always remember to love them unconditionally for our riding school horses are what help start your dream, make dreams come true and get you ready for those bigger dreams 🐴

Sometimes your entire ride consists of only walking. And sometimes those are the rides where we learn the most. (Rider AND horse).

We are in need of a stall cleaner. (Bonus if you can operate a w**d eater too, and don’t mind additional manual labor for extra hours). MUST HAVE reliable transportation. Experience around horses would be ideal but not required. MUST NOT BE AFRAID OF HARD, SWEATY, STINKY WORK., as some days will be much more physically demanding than others. I know it’s not a glamorous job but it is a critical job here, in order for all the horses to stay as healthy as possible. Pay is $10/hr. The days would be WED, THURS, SAT, SUN. Please don’t reach out unless you can commit to my demands listed in this post. If you’re interested in this as a second job, PLEASE THINK IT THROUGH and make sure you’ll be able to handle both jobs, as well as the rest of your daily life. I know there’s someone else out there that enjoys the hard work and horse time almost as much as I do!!
