Apparently, today is & I found this on the American Veterinary Medical Association page! ✨

Microchipped animals are more likely than non-microchipped animals to be returned to their family. Sure, you have a collar & a tag on your pet, but who's to say someone doesn't take it off & steal your pet, or it gets caught in a fence & breaks when they escape? You can't depend on that being the only source that connects them to you.

Microchipped dogs are 2x more likely to be returned to their owners & microchipped cats are 20x more likely to be returned to their owners. That's a VAST difference in the likelihood of returned animals. 📲🏠

Meet Guss - our resident torn-dewclaw repeat offender (yes, you read that right... repeat!). 😂

This handsome stud came in for a little look at his paw, some pain medications to go home with, & to get his vaccines updated. It's not his first rodeo, but he'll be the first to tell you he's a drama king & honestly... he's earned that crown. 👑

With a mix of patience, teamwork, & plenty of bribery (aka, our infamous freeze-dried beef liver treats), we all walked away happy! We can't get enough of his unique eyebrow/eye pattern either... he's a special one! 💛

Meet Simon, our distinguished gentleman who hung out with us for a few hours! 🐾✨

He stayed with us for a little bit during the day to do some further diagnostics on him, & we couldn't stop admiring his amazing goatee. Honestly, it looks better than most of these beards we see out in the wild. (Am I wrong though???)

Here for the vet visit, staying for the compliments on his goatee. 10/10 for style, 15/10 for charm! 😎

Does anyone want to take a wild guess what this video shows? This was viewed under our microscope in the clinic. Comment your guesses!

I will reveal the answer tomorrow afternoon, so stay tuned. 👀

UPDATE: For those of you who guessed microfilaria/heartworm, you are correct! This is what microfilaria looks like swimming through red blood cells in a single drop of blood from a dog's heartworm test.

These tiny worm-like organisms 🪱 are the larval stage of heartworms, & they're what we look for along with testing for adult heartworms. If we see these under the scope, it means the pet is infected & the adult heartworms are already present & reproducing.

➡️ This is why year-round heartworm prevention is SO important. Once infected, treatment can be tough on your pet (& your wallet!), but prevention is simple, safe & cost-effective.

If your pet hasn't been tested recently 💉 or has missed a dose or two of heartworm prevention, now is the time to catch up! It takes 6 months to develop in the heart & lungs after a single bite from an infected mosquito. One month missed can turn to a positive test 6 months later... don't wait until these squirmy guys show up in your pet's blood! 🩸

MEET THE STAFF!

Next up, we have Brandy! Our clients may always see her up front or running around the clinic working on tasks.

Brandy is a Receptionist, beloved Practice Manager, Chaos Coordinator, and everything in between. She has been at First Capitol for 7 years, with a total of 23 years in the veterinary medicine field. Her love for animals and a passion for helping them first inspired her to consider becoming a veterinarian, but later found the perfect fit supporting pets and their people in other vital roles. Brandy loves that no two days at the clinic are ever the same; there is always something new to learn. At home, she has a lively crew: Zena (dachshund/pug mix, well traveled, bossy old lady), Elphie (delicate little Frenchton), Jack (assistant manager and Frenchton who lives to chase the ball), Lucy, (mischievous DSH) and Felix (DSH, prefers life on the quieter side). Fun fact: Zena has probably pooped in more states than most people have visited - she’s roadtripped coast to coast! When Brandy’s not working, she enjoys traveling and stargazing. While she loves all animals, she has a soft spot for pandas!

🚨Is it an emergency or just an urgent care visit?🚨🐾🩺
Came across this super helpful Fast Track Triage Chart in a veterinary medicine page & had to share with our pet parents!

This is a great visual 👀 guide to help you quickly determine whether your pet needs urgent care or emergent care, based on their symptoms. From minor limping to full-on respiratory distress, this chart can help you make informed decisions in stressful moments.

💡Remember: we always recommend taking your pets to the appropriate location *based on their symptoms* & sometimes *based on our availability & ability to treat them quickly & thoroughly*. When in doubt, always call. We can help you figure out what the next steps are.

📌Save this for future reference & feel free to share with other pet owners - it could make all the difference in the world!

🐾 Meet Penelope! 🐾

This sweet girl came in for her annual vaccines & was an absolute angel the entire time. 💉✨ She was so patient, especially when liver treats were involved (her FAVORITE! 🐶❤️).

Penelope is a rescue who previously went through heartworm treatment, & we’re so happy to share that she’s now healthy and thriving! 🌟 We love seeing success stories like hers.. proof that second chances make all the difference.

We love rescues!

Midnight 🐈‍⬛ came in for a quick check due to recent bloodwork results. Luckily, her blood pressure was relatively normal! Go Midnight! 🥰

However, did you know that pets can have high blood pressure too? 🤯 Just like in humans, hypertension in animals can lead to serious health issues if left undetected: kidney damage, vision loss, heart problems, & neurological issues.

Why check your pet's blood pressure? 🐾🩺
✔️It's non-invasive & quick (depending on the cooperation of the pet).
✔️Helps monitor chronic conditions like kidney/heart disease.
✔️Important for senior pets or pets on certain medications.
✔️Allows for early detection & management before symptoms arise.

We often recommend routine blood pressure readings for senior pets or those with underlying health conditions. It's a simple step that can make a BIG difference in your pet's long-term health!

✨Snip snip, hooray!✨

These cuties are rocking their post-surgery suits like little runway models. 😻 Beyond the fashion statement, they've taken a big step towards a healthier future.. they've been spayed!

Spaying your cats isn't just about preventing litters (though that's important too!), it also helps:
✔️Prevent certain cancers & infections
✔️Reduce the risk of roaming, yowling, & unwanted behaviors
✔️Cut down on cat overpopulation in shelters & on the streets

Every surgery helps make a difference. Your cat stays healthier, & you're part of a bigger solution. It's a win-win!

Say hello to Auggie! 🐾👋🏼

He came in on Friday for an eye check 👀 because he'd been doing a little too much squinting lately. We also checked out a few lumpy bumpys since he was here & made sure his vaccines were all up to date! Auggie was a HUGE sweetheart, truly a perfect pup with his patience & willingness to do whatever needed to be done. He even snuck out a little tongue-out moment for the camera. 📸😋

🧪🐾 Is your pet over 8-9 years old? It might be time for senior bloodwork! 🐾🧪

Meet Ruby (Ruby-Dooby)! She's almost 11.5 years old & she came in for her annual visit to get her vaccines updated & some yearly bloodwork done. I think she was really in it for the treats, not anything else. As our pets age, their bodies can change in ways we can’t always see. That’s why routine bloodwork is SO important for our senior companions, even if we don't want to admit they're senior! Taking advantage of this diagnostic tool helps us detect issues early, monitor chronic conditions, & keep a close eye on their overall health.

📋 Key Benefits of Senior Bloodwork:
✅ Detects early signs of kidney, liver, & thyroid disease
✅ Helps manage chronic conditions like diabetes & heart disease
✅ Assesses overall health, including red/white blood cells, hydration, & more
✅ Gives us a baseline to track changes over time

🩺 A typical senior blood panel may include:
• CBC (Complete Blood Count)
• Chemistry Panel (kidney/liver function, electrolytes, glucose, etc.)
• Thyroid screening
• Urinalysis (if needed)

📅 How often should it be done?
We recommend yearly bloodwork for dogs over 8-9 years old & cats over 9 years old. Pets with existing conditions may need more frequent checks.

Your pet may look healthy on the outside, but early detection can make all the difference when it comes to quality of life & longevity. 💙

Questions or ready to schedule? Give us a call at 636-724-3200. We’re here to help your senior pet feel their best for years to come!
